    Default Google chrome

Just done a reinstall and fired up chrome and realised I can install drop box.box.Google music.remote desktop and a load of other apps and games

Anybody else stopped using the PC equivalents and just using chrome ?

Keeps my laptop free of software . but is there any downsides ?

Got my missus a Samsung chromebook for her work/uni work she loves it, it's silent, boots in under 7 seconds and does everything she needs. She has been using google docs and google drive and has had no issues. It's a great bit of software once you dig a bit deeper. Only draw is you need an Internet connection to get the best out of it.

they cannot be considered 'not evil'.

Google are the most prolific company in the world today that are using user data for profiling and marketing. Their recent activities have demonstrated that they have absolutely no concern for privacy.

The streetview car was an example where they were proven to be aware of what they were doing (harvesting network data packets from individual's routers / networks).

More recently their attempt to merge all their 60 privacy policies into one was met by much interest from the european commission and they are now under investigation for this. Google say it makes things simpler for users when the fact is that they now share information between all of their products on users. So they read you mail, see the videos you watch and use your search history to build profiles of you that are then sold to the highest bidder.

It is of no surprise that in a arecent report of the 20 most trusted companies in the US, google fell off the list whilst microsoft and mozilla entered the top 20. Microsoft and Mozilla have focussed on default privacy friendy DNT settings despite lots of pressure from industry to allow 3rd party data sharing. Privacy is clearly a competitive differentiator nowadays and google doesnt care because it controls such a large part of the market.

    Thanks to Zippeyrude

I agree with all your points. But choose to use google's products, because they work well. Microsoft and FB also have the same business practices, as do the majority of the large companies, but their products don't all work as well.

Google are also vocal supporters of a free internet and publish government requests for your data.

They even tried blaming that on a rogue coder that operated alone and inserted the code without their knowledge.

What a complete crock of shit. Not only did they snoop data, they tried to lie their way out of it.
