Iain Duncan Smith: Iain Duncan Smith to live on £53 a week.

This petition calls for Iain Duncan Smith, the current Work and Pensions Secretary, to prove his claim of being able to live on £7.57 a day, or £53 a week.

On this morning's Today Programme David Bennett, a market trader, said that after his housing benefit had been cut, he lives on £53 per week. The next interviewee was Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith, who was defending the changes. The interviewer then asked him if he could could live on this amount. He replied: "If I had to, I would."

This petition calls on Iain Duncan Smith to live on this budget for at least one year. This would help realise the conservative party`s current mantra that "We are all in this together".

This would mean a 97% reduction in his current income, which is £1,581.02 a week or £225 a day after tax*.

Signed - As stated won't happen or a watered down "week" may happen...but tbh even that is unlikely and proves nothing. I do recall some mp living for a week or so on benefits a few years back. She actually gave a good account of her "plight" but also admitted at the end that she always knew that her situation was going to change for the good in X amount of days...something which a lot/most people who rely on benefits can not look forward too. Can't remember which Mp it was but it was on TV a couple of years or so back.

Thing I wonder is how on earth the quoted guy managed to have £53 a week left over after all bills are paid.

Unfortunately I'm back to signing on again - if I try quick back of the fag packet calculations, I have nothing left once bills are paid, probably even less. Problem is with these kind of calculations is they always miss bits out as not calculated ruthlessly, leaving many things out.

In reality I need luck, friends, family, uncollected debts, equipment I can reluctantly sell and the ability to work in return for favours I need, in order to keep me going, and I'm just a single guy without dependants.
