Default Need help adding MX records

I am not overly-familiar with a lot of web design services but in the past I have added MX records etc. to use hosted exchange on the domain hosted by another provider.

I have a domain with 123-reg and it's nameservers are pointing to hostgator where the site is hosted. I am trying to add a MX/TXT record to validate I own the domain but 123reg say this is only possible if I use their nameservers. I am just wondering where that leaves me.

Am I able to add the records for this domain using the Hostgator account? Or would I have to revert nameservers back to 123reg and have that forward to my hosting using another method?

    Clueless,
    Cheers

I am with 123-reg and have my MX records pointing at google email servers.

Controll Panel -> Manage Domain -> In Advance Domain Settings Manage DNS. Then select option for advance DNS.
This page has "Reset DNS" - Reset your DNS to the default 123-reg.co.uk settings and start from scratch

Thanks mate, I had tried that already (hadn't reset them though as I didn't want my website to go down) but wasn't sure what the alternative method of pointing to my website would be? Afaik you change nameservers and that deals with the rest. Can I add DNS records to direct http traffic to my hosting?

I don't own the hosting account with Hostgator but I can get in touch with the account holder over there.

I'm pretty sure that if you set the name servers to hostgator you'd change the mx records within hostgator...

Thanks for that, thought that might be the case. So my next question - is there a way to have the name servers with 123reg and still have my domain point to host gator to access my website? Reason being I would have access to the dns records without having to bother the person hosting for me?

pretty sure that's the A record, and that will point just the dns for the domain to hostgator or anywhere else, leaving you to set MX in 123reg and point that whereever you want.
