It wouldn't surprise me at all if we soon learnt that Sly are able to update receiver ID's with OTA software updates periodically, and even change the algorithm that is used to generate them, with little notice and effort. If they've done it sensibly, this receiver ID could end up just being another form of rolling key, one that they only need to start rolling once the first iteration has been reversed. Let's hope that doesn't happen.

I guess a few might have to get a very long stick and point the dish away from 28.2 ;-)

Good point that. The pirate "ethics" if you like have always been like that. I remember people raping OnDigi in a similar way without giving anything back and look what happened to them.

You're absolutely right. It's all about these folk that operate pay servers, not those who share their package to two bedrooms in the house and to a few people on the continent that would typically not be able to clear those channels, with no re-sharing. That is the main target because that's where the big money is being lost. If all of those 800 clients that rookie was speaking of were on a Sly World package, they'd be getting £60,000 out of that. Obviously the customer conversion would work out at much less, but when you remember that this is ONE pay-server you're talking about, then we're looking at potentially millions of pounds of lost revenue every single month. Clearly it's worth their while to get this right, which is why I fear that this fix isn't going to be easily circumvented. If it is, then it'll roll on and on to a degree which makes it a ball-ache to keep up with.

In return, those folk get free access to the card on the continent. Both parties probably rarely watch the cards they're receiving but like all hobbyists, we all like the option of being able to do so seeing as that in many cases, subscriptions to those foreign providers are either not worth it for how much they'd be used, or impossible outside of their country. There's no financial harm to any of the providers involved, except perhaps Sky (Multiroom), but it's rare that all boxes in a house are being used at the same time. It may as well be a Slingbox client for what it's worth.

I'd have preferred it if they'd just continued to infiltrate the pay server networks that are so rife and take down cards that are part of those, but I can imagine that being difficult, time-consuming and probably costly. Hobbyists tend to take great care in making sure their card(s) are only available to those select few they're in contact with, and with that in mind they'd be unaffected. Still, I do understand why Sky are doing it so I imagine most folk can't be too peeved about it.

too many people making too much out of what used to be a hobby, many did say once we start seeing payservers then this will be the beginning of the end. Times have changed though, most of the stuff you can find online via newsgroups, torrents etc. In the age of the internet do we really need to watch live tv?

While I agree with these sentiments unfortunately I fear the opposite may happen. Very large payservers who make a fortune from stealing and selling "shares" could be the only ones able to afford the hack if it does come.
The payservers I have come across are very amateur.

Well yes, and the fact they spunked all their money on football at the time... But losing money from their PPV stuff and premium Sky channels (much to Sky's annoyance as well no doubt) fucked them.

They also have a new service where they want to charge you £10 a day to watch a sports channel.
I mean this is all they do, come up with ideas in how they going to grab your hard earned cash.
This is why I hate these money grabbing bast*ards and this is why I will never ever pay for their services.

Just to confirm, are we talking about Sky here or the people running the pay servers?

Sky, I believe, are allowing people to purchase a game of football for a tenner.

Only in Britain….do we use the word “politics” to describe the process of Government. “Poli” in Latin meaning “many” and “tics” meaning “bloodsucking
