Oh right... No wonder you're seeing 11 day rebuilds on an Atom. My Atom netbook can't even play flash lol

You might wanna look at a core I- 'T' version processors. My i3-2120T is 35w, the i3-2120 is 65w. There are 'T' versions of the i5 and i7 if you need more grunt.

My rig cost me around £400 (IIRC, excluding the drives) it sits and idles most of the day. I'm just looking in to getting one of those Owl things to see how much power it drains. Are they any good?

One thing I've been reading is that Windows is better then Linux when it comes to power saving as *nix is designed to be an 'always on' OS but Windows has been built with power saving in mind from the ground up so is far more efficient.

Ok I will do that this weekend when I list all of my IT gear that I do not use for sale.

Yes mate they are great! It even tells me that my "eco" multi plug with auto power off plugs for my computer drains power when everything is off!

Best place to buy them is probably eBay

I've just been outbid on one. I put down £15 inc postage. What sort of price you reckon I should be looking to pay? I've no idea what a good deal on a 2nd hand one is lol

I wouldn't pay more than £15. I think I got mine from eBay or Maplins for around that price.

I have been thinking long and hard about my future setup and I am not convinced that I need a ESXi build or that I would even use ESXi enough to justify the build let alone the cost.

So I am going to upgrade my NAS box and ensure it is powerful enough to handle all the plugins that I would want to run, handle multiple audio/visual streams and maybe run virtual box as well. I've been told that I do not need all the gear that I need for ESXi

But more importantly the box will be energy efficient.

Looks like I will be changing my specifications again!!

Nope, don't need any VM stuff but am sure I read elsewhere people using it successfully on this system. I upgraded the memory which I'm sure most do, considering a network card as well.

I run ESXi on my N45L and it works a treat. Nice and easy to take backups and I've got two hosts (Win 7 and Ubuntu) running on it.8gb RAM. Using Ubuntu as my main OS - newznab, sab etc. Well worth the money for a NAS.

No idea sorry. It's not like I'm running a cluster and i'm pretty sure it's lower than the desktop PC that it's replaced. - that said a mate of mine lives on a houseboat and it one of those tree hugging hippies that likes low power consumption and he is running two of them.

1w standby is good enough for me

I wonder if I can transplant the parts into another case for more drives

I built a mini itx PC loaded with Freenas 0.7.5 . 2 X 1tb WD server drives (RAID 1). It sits on a shelf in a built in wardrobe and has been up for 18 months (UPS backed)

I keep all my stuff on it and stream movies to a WD TV live box attached to a 50" TV Works like a charm.

    Hp N40L. WHS 11. 5 x 2TB Drives. 1 x 256MB SSD. 8 Gig RAM.

Had it for about 2 years now. Wanting to upgrade when they bring out a new one that catches my eye. Waiting for some 5TB Red Drives to be released too as I am getting close to filling the server.

My new line of thought, why not use laptops as home servers. Yes you don't get all the cool remote access/high availability features and you can't add loads of storage, but they are small, efficient on power, don't kick out much heat and kind of have an inbuilt ups (the battery).

I wouldn't dream of doing this in a work production environment but for stuff at home I'm thinking this may be the way forward.

I'm looking at sticking a new SSD boot drive in mine, going from 4 to 16gb and sticking Hyper-V 2012 server (the free 'core' version) on there.

Thinking I'll stick Sab/SB/CP/Headphones/Subsonic/AirVideoServer/MiniDLNA on one, Newsnab on another, Musicbrainz server on a 3rd, Dropbox syncing a number of accounts on a 4th.

Not because it will be any better, just coz it'll give me something to tinker about with for a while.

Hmmm. The UPS thing would be cool, but I'd prob lean towards the Pi for size.

You could set up HA and remote access on lappys though. You'd just need to stick iSCSI target on one that was the main storage server and configure the iSCSI volumes to be CSVs. Two more lappys clustered and pointed to the iSCSI CSV. One fails and the other picks up the slack.

Not sure why you'd need that for a home NAS box though lol

Remote access on a lappy will work but is wank compared to stuff like DRAC/iLO

I have had a plan for a Windows Storage Server box to use as an iSCSI target for a while but haven't had the funds to follow through.

Edit Also when I said HA, I was thinking of stuff like RAID, redundant PSU's, etc.
