Tech Show us your servers / NAS boxes!

    Hi guys,

    This is my current setup:

    12Tb File Server: Fractal Design Array R2, Intel D510MO / D510 Intel MN10, 4Gb DDR2 800Mhz. This server runs UnRAID.

    *Photo's to be attached*[/b]

I love my setup mainly due to it's extremely low powered! But file transfers are painfully slow and it doesn't handle multi tasking well... So I am thinking of upgrading and using ESXi to combine systems into one unit (unsure what systems these will be though lol). My major bugbear is power hungry systems especially when electric is not cheap in the UK.... So I want the build to draw as little power as possible!

    My proposed new setup:

Case: Norco 4224 - Need to find the 120mm fan plate
    Motherboard: SUPERMICRO MBD-X9SCM-F-O
    RAM: 2x 8GB KVR1333D3E9SK2/8G
    CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1230
    Power Supply: ?
    SATA Expansion Card(s): 3x IBM M1015 - Purchased: £261.37 New
    Cables:

    Total Cost:

    Hard Drives I already have:

    Parity Drive: 2TB
    Data Drives: 17x either 1TB, 1.5TB or 2TB
    Cache Drive: 1x 500GB 2.5"
Total Drive Capacity: Unknown at present as it depends on the state of the hard drives I have

Although I am thinking of swapping them all for 3TB WD Red as power consumption is tiny!

    WD Red: 2TB/3TB: Read/Write 4.4W, Idle 4.1W, Sleep/Standby .6W
    WD Green: 2TB: Read/Write 4.5W, Idle 2.5W Idle, Sleep/Standby .7W

The primary uses of the new server will be:

    - Computer backups (rsync) - UnRAID
    - Web server (to test my websites before they go live) - UnRAID
    - Virtual machine (so I can use Windows at university as it is all Macs) - ESXi
    - Film, TV, Music Storage - UnRAID
    - XBMC server/streaming in my flat - UnRAID
    - Run the usual addons to source content for XBMC (Media Center) - UnRAID
    - Home Automation system - ESXi/UnRAID
    - Home security; IP Cameras

Do you think I actually need this? What would you do/change? Any ideas on how I can work out the potential power consumption on my proposed build as this will control want actual happens

    Any other advice/tips etc?

This is the one I've got on BST - I used for about 12 months as an ESXi server.

    2 x xeon quads at 2.00, 20Gb RAM, 8 x 146GB 15k SAS, 1x 73GB 15k SAS. Had another 146Gb that died.

I had loads running on it - I had a pfsense router with all sorts of addons, untangle for web logging/filtering, SipX for my VOIP server, Windows XP and 7 test VM's, one Server 2008 domain controller with WSUS and another Server Core domain controller, Exchange server, Another 2k8 Server for IIS and providing services to IP phones, Ubuntu and CentOS test VM's, Nagios network monitor running on another Ubuntu, + 4 Server 2k8 and 4 Server 2k8 Core which I used when I started but never finished reading the MCITP books. I'm sure I can some other small VM's but can't remember now.Photo095.jpg

amazing how things get so complicated so quickly
You know he grew up as a little shitspark from the old shitflint and then he turned into a shitbonfire and driven by the winds of his monumental ignorance he turned into a raging shitfirestorm. I remember I was stupid enough to buy a set of 1855 blades to use at home. As soon as I turned the enclosure on I realised the mistake I made

Lmao. I can imagine your reaction when you cranked those up and heard them for the first time. The big central fan sounds like a jet engine!

Bloody hell Mr James is that at work or home?! I'm forever having the piss taken out of me at work for having kit at home, you can't beat it though!

I've just got a couple of Microservers, 4x IBM x3455s, an HP Proliant DL585 G5 and a Dell CS23, and it's more than enough for anything I've thrown at it all yet. I'm tempted to sack the 585 off on eBay and maybe pick up another 1U box but we'll see!

    Thanks to reverend

No it's not at home lol... It's one half of a two-site a datacentre I installed a few months back. Prob about £30K of kit in that pic.

    IMG_2606.JPG

This is what I'm using at home for everything. I custom built my nas coz I wanted it to be silent & low powered but have some punch if I need it. Not usually things that go together but I'd been using OEM nas boxes and they just choked at the first sign of hard work.

In the end I opted for a mini-itx Intel DH67CF main board with a 35w Intel i3 2120T 2.6Ghz, 4GB RAM and 5.5TB Storage using WD Greens. It's fitted out with BeQuiet PSU/CPU fans which are super quiet. I can't hear it at the minute and it's about 3ft away. Sometimes they'll ramp up a bit if it starts unraring GBs of stuff but it you still have to strain to hear it.

Currently running a GUI-less Debian Squeeze OS on it.
    Sabnzbd/SickBeard/CouchPotato/Headphones/Transmission/newznab for downloads
AirVideo/Subsonic for Video/Audio streaming to iPhones
Minidlna for video streaming to Windows Media Player
Samba file sharing for Windows clients
    NFS sharing for WDTV/Linux devices
    vsftpd for FTP access
    Dropbox for cloud backup
    ssh for remote access
and fail2ban to tarpit the hackers

As Mr. James said, it's to block hackers. You get it to scan various logs and temporarily block ip addresses that you can determine from logs are probably trying to do naughty things.

Yeah, you can get it doing all sorts of stuff but I just have it monitoring the logs for 5 failed login attempts within 15 mins from the same ip. If it detects that's happened it blocks that IP address for an hour.

Sounds good in principle, but in reality it just means I lock myself out every time I have caps lock on by mistake... And that happens far more frequently than snoopers trying to get in lol

Tbh I am a draytek partner so get a discount and thought I might as well get something I can learn with. Needed a router that could replace my homehub 2 with BT broadband talk but I've migrated to voipfone now so even better.

I thought the exact same too. Only other thing I could think was home automation. I suppose streaming to different consoles can be a pain though. Especially if you watch lots of subtitled stuff. For the price of a pi it might be worth the lack of hassle lol

The Pi's are just for streaming, each one has Raspbmc installed and all are connected to a central MYSQL database on the ReadyNAS for storing all the media, so for example if im watching a film in the living room and stop it i can then go upstairs to the bedroom and click play for the same film and it will pick up where i left off, also i only update the database from one of the servers and when i do every Pi automatically gets the updated Movies, TV Shows, Music etc. without me having to manually update each one - saves alot of time

xbmc on my android tab is also connected to the central database so i can use that as a portable media player around the house

the game consoles arent really used for streaming, i used to use original xbox's with XBMC but they are unable to play HD content and for the price of a Pi i just decided to replace them all, however i do collect Game Consoles so if i have at least 50 i think (SNES, Mega Drive, Playstation 1,2,3, Xbox's, 360's - including one built into a PC Case with a built in HD-DVD drive, Jaguar, Saturn, Net Yaroze, N64 with DrV64 - too many to mention plus hundreds of games and accessories)

some things i forgot from the network map (i now realise) are the LG TV's i have as they are Network ready and have iPlayer etc available but i completely forgot about them

their is some noticeable lag occasionally if you are trying to watch stuff in the summer house as theirs a ton of cabling running from the upstairs bedroom down to the bottom of the garden, might need to add a router or switch (probably a router for more wireless access) to give it a little boost in between
