Copy the 'forum' link onto your sig page in 'My Settings"
it's the second tab on the 'share' page on Speedtest.
    If at first you don't succeed.....redefine success. . . .

Depends on the limitations of the source or server, as with some news servers they limit and some ISP's limit certain services.

On a good day and taking BB's comments into consideration it should take you between 6 & 8 hours.

speedtest.net used to be reliable but recently I've seen some terrible figures. Using a 1gbps leased line it sometimes shows me getting around 20mbps! Downloading the 1gb test file from www.thinkbroadband.com/download I can pretty much max out my gigabit network card on the same circuit! Also for some reason on my 1gbps leased line (1gbps up AND down) the upstream rarely shows more than about 6mbps.... most odd don't you think.

This is my home line tested through speedtest.net
    2697368986.png

Considering that I can download at 7 megabytes per second to my home and upload at over 2 megabytes per second the figures seem a bit off to me.

To be honest im lost with all the numbers orange say "Broadband speeds can vary and are influenced by a number of factors. Based on the information we've been provided with about your home address, we estimate that
your line can support a maximum speed of 17.0 Meg. does that make sense to anybody i thought i would wizz through a d/l

Their estimate seems about right then judging by your speedtest result.

You might find it confusing because broadband speed is measured in Megabits not MegaBytes, so you have to divide your speed by 8 to get the relative speed in megabytes/sec

    Thanks to Mule

Why are upload rates for the average joe simply awful.

I'm currently at work where the ping is 13ms. Download is 67.45 and upload is 49.65 which works really well when uploading to MEGA service,. Those upload speeds are incredible.

I have no idea of the real reason but always presumed it was because most didn't upload and they wanted to avoid people self hosting but it really is helpful to me now having a decent upload speed.

It's a double edge sword for me, I'd upload all I've got, if I could. I long for the say I can cloud storage my 3-4TB of useless shit that I want to keep!

I've been trying to run iTunes match for ages but have 14,000 albums that need uploading manually, on my home ADSL connection, it'll take around 3 months at current speeds!

Traffic costs the same no matter what direction it's travelling in so since most people aren't interested in upload speeds all that much they save money by offering shit speeds.

If only it were that simple.

Your phone line can only handle a certain amount of bandwidth. In theory you could have it all used for your downstream but with no upstream you wouldn't be able to make a request for anything. Telcos settled this by coming up with a way to split the bandwidth fairly. Also people still need upstream to upload photos and videos etc so it can't be too small.

Bethere used to offer the option to lose some of your downstream bandwidth and shift the frequencies thereby giving you a higher upstream.

If you want upstream the same speed as your downstream you would have to go with SDSL (Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line). These are a lot more expensive as they have to offer high speeds both ways so back when 8mbps down and 768kbps was the norm it would in effect use twice the amount of frequencies to use an 8mbps SDSL line. These usually have an expensive service wrap on them so you get a much lower contention ratio and 24 hour service desks with an SLA so if your line breaks they will pay if they take too long to fix it.

Home broadband is basically a no-frills service.

I have no idea on costs now but about 10 years ago a 2mbps circuit (if you were outside of London) would set you back as much as £45000 a year!
