    Default Sky alternatives

Just coming to the end of 6 months movies and sport for half price

Now my bill is 86 quid a month inc ADSL and phone

Just wondering what the alternatives are if I bin sky

Looking into BT vision and have been quoted 35 a month . but not sure if I have to pay for the on demand stuff

Have seen some skybox and open box stuff mentioned in the other thread

Is this the cheapest way to get the most channels?

Mainly want channels for the kids and sport

Any other boxes I can get that use my existing sky dish ?

If I can get it down to 40 to 50 a month I would be happy

Probably not a good time to recommend a linux box. It's future is undecided, and we don't know how long it's got. Personally, I think it'll be a good thing when it goes.

    Thanks to Geko

I agree with Geko. Although with a linux box you do have a lot of alternatives to $ky if you have your own dish. Plenty of european broadcasters out there but if it's a shared dish or you don't want to invest in one of those multiple angle LNBs or motorised dish it may well not be worth it. Can't see non-HD stuff disappearing for some time though and I'm sure there would be a way around it eventually.

Hvae you called Sky and told them you're leaving due to the cost? I did this last year, when my 12month half price deal ran out. I told them I wanted to pay the same or else I'm leaving it. They said they would give it me for 8 months, I've one month to go before this expires so will try the same again !

I would have Sky at half price. Better than faffing around with a dish and european providers (unless you enjoy that, which some do). I'm not going to talk too much about CS for obvious reasons, but... I don't think hardware encoding will be cracked...!

A lot depends on what it is you want to watch. I have the basic $ky broadband and phone, as we like $ky plus. But then I have an apple tv and raspberry pi for xbmc with the video add ons.

if you buy a cheapo skybox/openbox for 50 quid / and purchase a gift for 30- 40 for 12 months and you only get a month out of it every other month is a bonus
i think they are going for the hd channels first ( unconfirmed just by reading round other forums)

In the end they gave me free multiroom, half price fibre broadband and line rental for 12 months , was on normal adsl before and they waived the 50 installation. Cancelled the sports and now use navi x with the fibre broadband , wouldn't stream very well before
