Help iPad 3 watch movies via Nas?

Hi all, I've got a nas duo that I would like to use to stream films to an iPad. Can someone tell me how to do this please?

I've got Oplayer HD but have no idea how to connect to the fooking thing! grrr.

Any help or suggestions would be great as this has been doing my head in for too long now.

    Cheers,

    Devs

have you setup up the samba shares on your nas? You'll need something that can read off samba shares on your ipad (xbmc)

Hi mate and thanks for the quick reply. I canny see anywhere to set samba shares via the adain. Its a read nas duo v1. the share is currently set to CIFS and AFP.

I've had it setup to stream on a previous ipad so know it can be done via this nas but cant figure

If you have a PC on at the same time have a look at this - http://www.inmethod.com/air-video/index.html

If you use H264 passthrough then it will just play on the device, and battery usage is minimal too.

I'm not sure how to mate (without sounding like a mong!) I've just tried entering the IP address of: 192.168.1.108 and also afp://192.168.1.108/ via oPlayer, but nothing. It just spins ;(

@ reverend - I'm mac based mate, fell out with pc's a while ago.

    Cheers men.

Good player used to play stuff from LAN shares but I know they were having some licencing issues with certain codecs and had to take them out so I know older versions are better

Your ReadyNAS is showing the SMB share as the CIFS one - SMB / SAMBA / CIFS - all basically different names for MS Windows file sharing.

CIFS is the implementation of older MS SMB, SAMBA is the open source version and SMB is Microsoft's own built in Windows file sharing stuff which is up to v3 in Windows 8.

On OSX I can connect by pressing Command + K and in the box that opens you just enter smb://ip/share - ie smb://192.168.0.10/p0rn

The reviews of OPlayer HD are saying that it doesn't do AC3 decoding any more which is most downloaded stuff out of the way, DTS is a common one which they're all removing now too.

I did try XBMC on the iPad and it was very nice but in the end I just upgraded to the latest official iOS and stuck with that Air Video and just transcode everything, I can also VPN in from anywhere and watch any of the stuff at home and quality is fine

Jailbreak your iPad if possible and install xbmc, from there it should be easy. I can help send instructions for you. Is your readynas set to static IP? You can do this in the admin pages. There shouldn't be any ports to configure.

If you do not want to jailbreak download airplayer. It picks up shares no problem.

Cheers for all the extra info guys. Will have another play over the weekend and hopefully get it fixed. Keen to get it working to keep my son quiet for a few mins!

Buzz player for iPad will scan your network, it also recognises different types of shares. You than choose your nas and it will play all types of video formats. Forget trying to stream MKV though as wifi can't handle it.

You can wirelessly stream 720p/1080p without stutter? I presume you must use an app that has a massive buffer.

On iPad, good player, xbmc work fine with 1080p no stutter and very little start up lag.

You only need 5-10Mb/s to stream 1080p H264 and it's more down to wifi quality than speed. Everyone's wifi network exceeds 10Mb these days.
