Advice Should I buy this amp?

    http://www.trustedreviews.com/onkyo-...-System_review

Been offered a barely used one of these for £100. What do you reckon?

Currently running a Nad that is 25 years old and has some dry joints but I like its sound. Needs fixing or replacing.

I have a few sets of speakers lying around. Two pairs of bookshelf Eltax and some Mordaunt Short MS10s. I have no sub.

Part of me thinks you can't go wrong , but older stuff tended to have a warmer sound so you may be disappointed. I remember when I blew my Yamaha CR2020, I was seriously pissed off for a few months. Saying that, I eventually got used to the sound of a more modern amp.

I've also got a pair of MS10's on my desk, trust me, adding a sub brings in a whole new dimension.

depends if you want to dip your toe into 5.1 or more. I recommend a sub for the hell of it. Also in my opinion keep all front speaker the same, and the voice coils at the same level. Ive listened to a few Onkyo amps and yeah they are quite nice. But not really a patch on the NAD IMHO, for audio

If I did get it I was going to use it for AV as well so feed the Popcorn Hour through it, 360, TV so it will be filling a gap. Was also considering getting an Onkyo iPhone dock to use with the iPods and iPhones knocking round the house so that they can be driven using the Logitech remote I have.

can you audition it with your speakers? Looks like a decent amp for 100 bar.

I picked up a Denon AVC-A1SR from AVForums for about 300 quid a few years ago to replace my old Yamaha DSP-A1 and I love it - like you guys say the older amps do sound warmer to me too. I bought some new speakers for it a few years back and went to the local SuperFi where they demoed the top end Pioneer all in one job and to be honest I wasn't a fan at all! It sounded great for Transformers but I didn't like the sound of the music through it.

The biggest problem for me is what do I upgrade to when this dies - to be honest it's probably not an issue as it'll probably all have to go one day due to the little one but we shall see. First time it goes I'll pay to get it repaired somewhere I hope!

    Thanks to reverend

Sounds a bargain at £100. My Arcam Alpha 8 amp died a month or so ago after 10 years of superb service.

Still not found a replacement but that Onkyo looks good. Would be nice to make the most of the ATv2, xbox etc

The 7.1, with 4 HDMI inputs are worth £100 of anyone's money.
I have a similar spec one from Denon that cost me over £400 3 years ago and it's still going strong today running my 7.1 KEF 3001 Speakers system.

The going rate is hard to work out. But if you need one, I'd go for it.

I have a onkyo 606, they are ok and full of features for the price. Depending what your after take look at the onkyo 414, you can pick a brand new one for around £175.

Thanks for the offer rookie. Went for this and plumbed it all in yesterday and put the telly on a cantilever thingy above it. Only running four speakers on it at the moment till I get some others but it sounds fucking great on just them. They are bassy units though.

Same here with arcam, you wouldn't think it but the far worst Return rate than others.
We have also stopped Spec'ing the newer lower end Onkyo's, we have had Audio and network issues!

I have an Onkyo 875 and it's now about 5 years old and still sounds superb - mind you it cost over £1000 if I remember correctly. Only problems with it is it doesn't do HDMI 1.4 (so no 3D consoles/bluray through it) and that it get REALLY hot. What Home Cinema joked that they could actually fry an egg on top of it and to be honest it's not far from the truth when it gets hot.

Oh and it's the size of a small dorma bungalow and weighs craploads.

I would easily recommend Onkyo - the sound and power output are amazing.

I like it I have to say. Didn't want anything too chunky, had to move the TV as it is. The previous amp was about half as deep and half as short front to back.

Got one of these coming for it. Will see how it goes.

Only problem with that is that if you have any DRMd music it will not play through it if I remember correctly. Instead I just bought the best 3.5 mm cable I could find. I loved the idea but the missus buys all her music off iTunes so it was a no go on the dock

you will be good to go then. My brother in law bought the same amp as me and had the dock and it was sweet. Not cheap though if I remember.

Got it cheap second hand. Have been pissing about all night sorting my Harmony Remote out, and thank fuck it does the dock as well, rationalising and sorting out my Activities better in it. Works a fucking charm now.
