Ubisoft has just announced Tom Clancy's The Division for Xbox One and PS4, an RPG shooter set in the aftermath of a global meltdown brought about by a deadly virus outbreak. It's a massively multiplayer open world experience, in which teams of survivors compete for resources. Massive Entertainment is developing the game, which supports cross-platform play with tablets. The reveal gameplay video shows four raggedy operatives tramping through a snowed-under New York, using high tech Splinter Cell-style gear to explore and fight off bandits. There's a strong emphasis on combat gadgetry in particular - you can expect to deploy cover-mounted automatic turrets, homing rolling mines, holographic tagging systems and RPG skills such as a group heal or buff.

During the demo, one player is shown controlling an aerial drone via a tablet - it's not clear whether this is representative of the mechanical split between The Division on consoles and portable devices, but I'd say there's a reasonable chance it is.

You'll fight other bands of players while seeking to aid NPCs, explore ruined interiors and scuttle down ghostly city streets. The game's out in 2014. Check out the footage.
