It turns out that the long-awaited Killer Instinct remake is free-to-play - but players will need to buy each character individually. Except for the Tibetan monk Jago, that is, who comes with the game. So, unless you're happy paying money for games (which we assume you are), you will be fighting an awful lot of monks. Eurogamer spoke to one of the game's producers at an event last night. "It's really impressive to have a roster of 50 characters, but how many of those characters am I really going to play? And I have to buy a $60 game in order to play those one or two characters I want to play.
"Fighting games are big and expensive and they can be complicated. It's very hard to get good at a number of characters. You generally gravitate towards one or two or three or four at the most. We want players to be able to experience the game that way. Just buy the characters you want or buy them all and we'll give you a discount on that."
The unnamed producer also revealed that Rare aren't making the game themselves, with Double Helix, a studio with a rich history (formed of Shiny Entertainment) that's made some very average games recently, taking on development duties. "At Rare there are not many people who worked on the original game who are there any more, but there are some people who worked on it. We send builds to them. We get their feedback, and we factor that in to how we approach the game."
"We want to make sure when we're making it we're staying true to the original game and Rare is good at helping us with that. But the real standard bearer for that is Ken Lobb. He's the guy keeping that alive. He has the knowledge of all the systems." And he will, apparently, be involved.
More characters will be released regularly over time; Eurogamer suggests that they will be priced at the dollar mark each, with discounts available for a bulk purchase.
Oh, and Game doesn't seem to have got the message about what free-to-play means. They appear to be allowing you to preorder this free-to-play game for one English pound. Or perhaps it's going to be released as an all-in-one boxed version too.
