I remember when you used to play a game to be rewarded with a cut scene or a story (Street Fighter style).
I remember when it got more advanced with the like of Resident Evil/Dino Crisis, Silent Hill etc... where the ending was different depending on your rating but you still looked forward to a cut scene at the end of the game.
I remember playing the likes of Resi Evil and trying to beat some of the factors (like completing under 1 hour etc) which would give you different items when you played the game again (yes, you played a game more than once!!)

Now days however, the Cut Scenes are the Game. As I said in another post, the most gameplay you get is pressing [A] to skip.
Now days, the Bazooka you might have got with unlimited ammo for completing the game in under an hour is now a DLC option for 800 M$ (or $ony equivalent) points.
Now days, if you play a game twice then it must be really really good... The chances are you are straight down to Game, trading in your £35 purchase for £10 off another title (or £6 cash). Game then sell on these games for £20. Who is the mug there...

I don't quite agree with you Golden Balls. BF3 on the PC is brilliant, pure action, huge maps, 64 players hell bent on destruction.

As for single player games,

Batman: Arkham City is open world, go and do whatever you want with tons of easter eggs, hidden bonuses, riddles etc.
GT5/Forza - Racing, earn money, buy more cars, tune up, etc and online play.
Fifa/PES - All about the game.

These are 3 types of game off the top of my head. What are you banging on about cut scenes and pressing "A".

Greece-Lightning, plenty of games now on the big consoles are just FMV. We see a build up of E3 footage that is 'Not in game footage' which is the same as when many games are advertised on TV now too.

Yes there are still games that follow the 'old rules' but the majority of games now are nothing more than Tech Demo's.

You realise the same could be said of movies, the main problem with games now is that most ideas and concepts have been explored which means a lot of games are starting to seem samey. As for cut scenes, it depends what type of game you're playing and how it's done. In RPGs I fully expect quite a few of them because the story is integral to the game itself. The problem Nintendo has is it doesn't appeal to hardcore gamers like Xbox, PS and PCs do which is a huge market. I myself haven't even considered buying a Nintendo console for the simple fact there aren't enough games that interest me to justify buying. Also the fact none of my friends own one means I wouldn't have the social aspect that I do with my PC and Xbox.

A generalisation, but I'm not sure that anyone could argue that old games were intellectually stimulating either, that's why they're called Games. Ever played payment, flogger or Pitstop? I wouldn't even call something like zelda or halo intellectually stimulating

Not really sure where Nuanil is coming from, there has never really been any sort of connection between good games and 'intellectual' games, whatever they could be.

I love RPGs and have ploughed probably 1000's pf hours into them, but I have also pissed away many an hour on warioware. Games can sometimes stimulate the mind, but just because they don't doesn't mean they are bad, its a fucking video game after all.
