That's coz the ps3 failure rate was 10%, perfectly acceptable by modern manufacturing standards. Anything over that and you have to do something to rectify the situation.

Xbox failure rate was over 20% and they only reason they did anything about it was because the state of California took Microsoft to court over it. If California would have won, it would have cost them all the profit MS had made on Xbox and Xbox 360 worldwide. MS agreed to extend the warranty to 3 years so the case would be dropped.

YLOD is more common that reported due to them failing after the warranty period.... Xboxes, yes had the problem in or just after the warranty but the amount of PS3's I get over xboxes now is 10 - 1.

Slims are just as bad...

I guess it's coz Xbox owners are just used to buying new consoles now and don't bother taking them to be repaired... One of my mates has bought five now. I'm lucky I've only had to buy two lol

I'll probably stick with my 360 for a while longer yet, but I dare say my son will want one of them for Christmas, he's had a 360 for 4-5 years but I think the PS4 is looking like the obvious choice simply because he and his friends borrow one another's games,

Since I'm no longer 13 anymore, I just want to say that I think it's great that we have this kind of choice available to us. Both machines will be fantastic and will reflect the times we live in. I think the M$ press release was a fiasco as they had no idea what kind of back-lash their unclear, muddled message about second hand ownership, would cause. Even though the second hand market is really just a foot-note in any console's release they really ballsed it up by bringing so much negative attention to it.

I have owned a PS1/2/3 and Xbox/360 but never bought on release, I've always waited for the first round of price drops/good bundle deals. I think it will be the same with the next gen. I simply don't have €900 lying around to buy both systems before any kind of drop. I see myself buying the PS4 sometime mid-2014 and probably a XBOX ONE a year after that. Still plenty of life left in my PS3 with some great games still to come.

I reckon the safest bet is to let all you techno crazed overpriced paying launch purchasers buy on day 1 and then I can read 3 months + of your 'my console is better than yours because' threads...
Then I will make a more informed purchasing decision ;-)
