Powermac G4 problem with gfx card/cable/monitor?

been passed this by a friend, I assume it's probably the cable but can anyone help please?

Right, i've got a monitor that i used to use with my laptop, and i've bought the mac.. its a Mac Mini G4 series...
i've bought a adaptor which converts DVI cable (the Mac end) to a D-SUB (the monitor end)... so i plugged it all in, switched the monitor on and the mac on, made sure all the connections are in, the mac light and Monitor lights are all coming on, and their both making noises... but on the monitor screen, it's saying 'no connection' in big blue writing, just like it does, when you switch it on, with nothing attached!
so im thinking it's either the cable or it's the visual-out it'self, on the back of the mac.... i'll send the model number now

his cable is probably wrong for what he needs.

The G4 mac mini actually came with a dvi to vga adaptor in the box but I'm presuming that's not what he has.

My best guess would be that the mac is outputting digital and the monitor is analogue
