Your playstation mates must not be playing on ps4 then as you also have to pay to play online with that.
For me I currently have PC and xbox 360. Probably going to get an Xbox one at some point when the price drops and considering a PS4 but happy with what I have at the moment.
I think you will always need a PC in the house so might as well make it a good one as it will save you time in the long run and you can easily hook them up to TVs if you want to play on there as well.
The main downside of this is that they very very rarely offer games with more than 1 player and using a KB and mouse is a pain in the living room.
This is why I have a console as well, for playing the multiplayer split screen games like co-op Halo or COD and arcade games like Trials, N+, Wrecked Revenge and some of the Rock band games. I also use it for iplayer and to stream videos from my pc which Xbox one and PS4 can't do yet.
PC is good for things like SC2, Dota2, Torchlight 2, CS: GO and better looking Crysis 3 and Bioshock 3 type games.
Also you can pick up loads of cheap games in the Steam sales whereas the new console games are all very expensive at present.
I would get PC and one or other console, you mostly don't need both. Just pick the one with exclusives you like otherwise you have to pay for the controllers twice, the live subs twice and it gets a bit cluttered.
Edit:
Dam, didnt see this was from ages ago.
What did you get in the end?

XBONE can do this but you need an app on your phone to do it and choose the Play To Xbox One option
On Android and IOS people use an app called Skifta but on my windows phone I use Smart Player. XBOX ONE will only support its normal range of media types AVI etc at mo so dont bother trying with mkv files.

Ended up going for the ps4 . However plans are in the works and I'm saving up for a gaming laptop. And maybe the missus will buy me an xbox1 for Christmas next year ;-}
My reasons are simple for using a games console over a PC:
- I work on a PC all day so don't want to be sitting at it in leisure time as it feels like I'm working.
- I got hacked off (accepted years ago might have changed) with having to upgrade this and that to play the latest game, install a patch and piss about to get it running.
- The PC is still free and available while I am playing.
- Last time I played there was way too much game hacking going on with the PC like aimbots, again this may have changed now as it's years since I played on the PC but it has to be way easier for them to get into a game on a PC.
There are things I missed at first like using a keyboard and mouse but got used to a controller after a bit, price is cheaper on the PC and graphics better but for me you can have the best graphics ever the main thing is game play and when I think of some of my favorite games I can't think of any that graphics was the reason.
I think this is another case of not what is best or better it's more a case of what is best or better for the end user.

Go with the ps4 and Xbox
If you can afford it the best solution is to have your favourite console connected to your main tv and have a gaming pc for playing other non console games or games you prefer to play with a mouse and keyboard.

hi first i must say that is a good budget and with that i would go pc all the way as last pc i built was on a far less budget and is just over ten years old and only in the last 3 to 4 months have i had to upgrade and when you think that steam is coming in to pc gaming os it means that all game makers are going to or are looking at making pc native thats why xbox one and ps4 are using pc based hardware. with your budget you could even go for a good gaming rig that would blow both consoles away and get a xbox one or ps4 when it comes down to ps4 or xbox one both almost the same hardware so it comes down to what games you play but that said ps4 justs has the edge using gddr ram it is faster and going to have a longer life spec wise look at ps3 still not maxed out by any one game and still holds its own just with the xbox one graphics
my gig that i just built is good for a few years
msi am3+ motherboard
amd phenom2 6xcore at 3.6ghz/core
gigabite gtx780ti 3gb ram
ddr3 16gb (can go to 64gb) ram
1tb drive as main 2tb drive as backup/games
blue ray drive
duel layer dvd
1tb eternet
internal wifi 801n
artic ice 7" cpu cooler
all in a old atric 940 pro case
not found any thing that takes the temp above 42oC
all that for £380
How can ur system cost only £380. When a 780ti cost more than that on its own.
I have aver both the x1 and a ps4. Plus fairly good spec pc ( Intel i5 , 660ti and. 16 gig ram).
but I seem to keep being drawn to x1 more , due to ease of use for games, dashboard features and most of all xbox live mp.
Don't forget software prices too.
Take into account steam sales/green man gaming offers etc.
PC layout is initially many times higher for a high spec, but as time goes on it's purpose can change.
My gaming days are long gone but when I build a new PC I always end up putting a fairly decent graphics card in it just in case... My 17 year old son and most of his mates all have Xbone's or PS4's but they all have access to fairly decent PC's. They rave about PC gaming now because of the Steam sales that happen every week. DayZ and Rust are cooler than cool amongst the yoots.
It does seem to have evolved full circle to a certain degree.
When I was a nipper everyone young HAD TO HAVE a console.... now the younger ones seem to be swaying back to PC's
whereas now I am older although I know a PC is 'technically' better, after sitting in front of one all day I now prefer a console to sit back and relax in the armchair with a glass of Chianti ;-)
PC's are easy to upgrade, and because of that, you don't have to get an all new one all of the time. Plus, PC can emulate most consoles, wheras consoles have a hard time emulating Pc's
PC upgrading in my experience is a myth. I have been building and repairing PCs for about 15 years and I really can't think of a single instance where an upgrade was possible that gave the machine significantly more power. Unless you buy a really low end CPU or GPU in teh first place and upgrade it later, If you buy something decent from the offset then by the time there's a decent upgrade it needs a different socket or is severely crippled on your older mobo, so you end up buying pretty much a whole new system anyway.
The best thing about PCs and their upgradability is that you can build a lower spec system from old junk and build a media centre or web machine for a relative. and of course when something breaks its usually simple to replace.
I upgrade my PC every two years at very minimal expense.. Every time Intel release a new Architecture then I upgrade..
I reckon replacing the CPU and motherboard costs about £100 every two years..
just love my ps4 some great games out there
