Battlefield 4 might be the same old bundle of ironsights, blood flecks and brick dust at its core, but where the aesthetic underwhelms, you can't fault the quality of DICE's Frostbite 3 engine, which is showcased to astonishing effect in the below trailer. Various studio heads are shown talking up the tech - it's fundamental nowadays not just to the Battlefield franchise, but to EA projects as widely dispersed as Dragon Age: Inquisition and Need for Speed: Rivals. According to creative director Lars Gustavsson, DICE "stumbled constantly" before establishing the tools, as it had to build a new engine for every game, but is now free to "focus on the creative side".
Side note: a former Battlefield producer has suggested that a Battlefield 2142 sequel that runs on Frostbite 3 would be "awesome", but isn't sure DICE "has the balls". In rather heartening related news, the developer is working on a Star Wars: Battlefront sequel - presumably, it'll put Frostbite to good use.
