Ex-WWE star Matt Osborne, who performed as Doink the Clown, has passed away at the age of 55.

Doink the Clown, a huge name in WWE (then called WWF) during the 1990s, was known for playing pranks on fellow wrestlers and the crowd.

According to TMZ, it is thought that Osborne was found dead by his girlfriend in Texas.

The cause of death is not currently known.

Osborne wrestled in WCCW and WCW during the 1980s and early '90s before becoming one of WWE's most popular competitors in the guise of Doink.

He departed in 1993, following which Doink was played by Ray Apollo. However, Osborne returned for a Legends Battle Royal at Raw's 15th Anniversary.

"WWE is saddened by the news of Osborne's passing," the company said in a statement. "Our deepest condolences go out to Osborne's family, friends and fans."
