Default Roku LT - Any good?

    Howdy,

I need something to play Now TV on (mainly for the Sky Sports Day passes).

I have my 360 in the back room hooked upto a TV, but I need a solution for the front room.
It's a shame they have not released a channel for the Apple TV... Big fail if you ask me... Same as not been able to Airplay from iPhone/iPad to the Apple TV.

So I am looking at the Roku LT. It is currently only £34.50 at Currys!

Yes I know it is only 720p blah blah and the XS is a better option, but I am not too fussed about that. This will be plugged into my Sony in the front room which is Wireless (other than power).
When doing HD over wireless it only does 1080i in any case, so 720p is a fine solution.

All of this would be avoided if Sky let you Airplay the channel from the iPad!

As this will be in the front room, it might retire the ATV2. Therefore has anyone used Plex on it (or even XBMC ? ) for playing media back?

    Cheers

These are great but go for the XS if you can as its HD. I have one, the wife has one and a few friends have all bought them now. Works well with Plex too over the internet That's why everyone else got them so they could watch my video library haha

*EDIT* Just reread and saw you don't need HD. Well that's fine then. The LT is awesome too

For the price, it seems a no brainer to pick one up and play with.

The Samsung Bluray player we have even does network streaming so the Apple TV is getting less and less use... It does handle big files better than the Samsung, but if the Roku LT works then it will replace both of them as the primary streaming choice.

Got one reserved to collect after work, will see if I get out on time to grab it.

I just wish Sky would stop been so secretive about releasing Now on the ATV... Otherwise I would not be bothering!

I do have my Mac Mini hooked upto the TV, I could just use that or even bring the 360 into the room.. However I want a switch on and watch solution, something easy for the wife to use.

Does the LT have the headphone jack on the remote or is that the better models?

Only the Roku 3 has the headphone jack.

How well do these run XBMC? Compared to say a RPi?

I am not sure they do... It is all a bit hazy looking online for that info. Appears the better solution is Plex (they have an official channel).

They don't run XBMC. RPi is the way for XBMC (Got one of them too). The actual apps are just scripted things. You can make your own channels if you were so inclined and they don't need compiling just learning their weird 4GL style XML.

    OK just collected it.

What a stucking fupid idea that was!! It is about 4000 degree's out there! I'm a dripping sweaty mess, more so than usual!

But I have it now, £34.50 it is not far off an Xbox Live gold sub, which is needed if you want to watch Now TV I understand.
OK so I have a years Xbox Live, but I won't admit that to the wife

Not sure I will get to play with it tonight, probably the weekend.

The answer to my thread is 'No'

I cannot even install Now TV on it! Set up my account (UK) twice but the app is not there!

I have a feeling it's because I am either using a .com email or selected Paypal as payment... Even though both are linked to UK address...

    It is going back tomorrow.

Come on Sky, bring out an Apple TV channel for it!

I had no problems installing NowTV on mine but that was a few months back. Have you checked the Sky forums for Now TV?

It wasn't just NowTV it was all UK channels.
I reckon it is because I put Paypal in as the payment and not a card.

No matter, took it back and (eventually) got a refund.

    Hey there,

    Did you get your refund?

You probably are aware of this by now but Sky's Now TV is 9.99 delivered just now and is essentially the same unit but locked down more.

You should take a look at it. Just google Now TV and go to get Now TV on the site. I am in the process of installing plex just now so not bad for a tenner.

Sorry just read you got your refund! Good job.

Well after being all hyped up and a little bit deflated after the NowTV box, I bought two Roku LT's today and they are frikkin' ace.
There's so much stuff on the channel store it's impossible to get through it all, but the remote Roku app on Android that lets you browse, install & launch (as well stream photos and music natively) makes it a piece of piss and actually enjoyable to check out content delete/keep and move on.
Would have preferred the XS or Roku 3 but needed two and got them for £34.50 each at Currys. We watch Netflix/iPlayer more than anything and we've been watching on the Xbox - its nice to have a dedicated box for it, iPlayer and Spotify with a proper remote. Xbox Live seems to be so slow and clunky these days.
