I use walkjogrun which I have prob mentioned before to plot new routes.
Eventually you get to know the distance of certain roads and I occasionally just ad-lib some runs.

The last thing I need is another mapping website/logging tool lol.

I'll just have to do some exploring.

    Almost forgot last night's 17 miles... http://connect.garmin.com/activity/358355834

But more importantly I ran just over 5k this morning, again slow but I'm really happy with it.

It was just a touch over 5k, 5k tipped over at about 39mins I think. Reading novice threads in other forums I'm seeing lots of 40+ times so I'm really pleased.

I found I was able to manage my pace much better and adjust my work to maximise my heart rate where I wanted it to be (165-170), react and push on when needed.

I think I'll stick to that distance and look to improve my technique and time.

    Top man.

15km for me this morning, tight right hamstring and sore left achilles (I think the hamstring is for over compensating because of the ankle). Had these a few weeks now but particularly sore after the long drives at the weekend.

Anyhow, to my annoyance this morning the first 2km were not exactly accurate on the GPS. This happens from time to time...

I mix my routes up, do them in reverse etc... You are doing really good! My brother in law who is not exactly a slouch and my best mate are both still struggling to get up to consistent 5km's without a little break most of the time so well done.

Malty, got your Garmin invite. Made my profile accessible now so you should be able to see stats etc..
About 6 months+ before the Garmin I was using Mi Coach on the iPhone 3GS) but the GPS was terrible where I live, too many trees and viaducts that it could not deal with.

It's actually working out better than I thought using my garmin edge for running. I put the little tether line around my wrist and hold it all the way around. I thought it would annoy me but it hasn't so far and it's really easy to refer to it quickly for heart rate especially. I'd like a proper gps watch but can't really justify both.

I have a forerunner 60 (non gps) which I am going to use with the footpod when it arrives on the treadmill.

I'm finding running far more pleasurable than I thought I would. I have bought some decent shorts and dedicated tops, cheapy running shoes and everything seems to be going well. Running along the canal in the twilight really is stunning.

I'm already looking forward to Friday's run and am planning pushing on a bit to top off my heart rate where it should be.

Thanks for the support it really helps.

Kit I use on run days, my runs are at about 5:45am when it is much cooler. I cannot run in heat very well.

    Pre Run:
Deep Heat - Apply to bad Ankle..
Creatine - I take 3 of these before and 3 after http://www.hollandandbarrett.com/pag...did=248&cid=93 but we do have our own 'cook' who can supply supplements on here
I also take daily - Centrum, Cod Liver Oil, Glucosamine, Chondroitin & MSM (combined). I also pop a couple of ibuprofen to kill any other aches I have.
Body Glide - I put this around my sack and crack. Prevents chub rub which can be painful afterwards. I also put it on my feet where they are/have been known to blister and this stuff works. Go for the bigger 36g sticks, it is much much better than Vaseline.
A small handful of peanut M&M's or jelly's just for the initial energy boost.

    Running Kit:
1000 Mile Socks (Roughly £10 a pair) - These keep everything in place (Achilles etc..) and are very good at preventing blisters, which you will get the further you go and the more you wear the trainers down. I have a few pairs of these, in fact I have enough stuff for 3/4 runs a week without having to worry about washing it all the time.
Compression trunks - If I feel a twinge in my hamstring I will put a pair on. I have a couple in case and will always wear them on bigger runs.
Compression tights - For winter to not only keep legs warm but for the same reason above. For both the shorts/tights I then wear shorts over the top - I am using More Mile running shorts off Amazon.
Compression tops - short sleeve and long sleeve (for weather changes). These help to strengthen the back and prevent nipple burn. Also help to keep your Heart Rate monitor in place.
In both cases, unless branded ones are going cheap (Adidas etc..) I buy them from Korea on eBay. I have some Berghaus thicker tops I use in the winter months.

If it is raining I have a lightweight jacket, the last thing you want is to be too hot.
Headphones and Music. I use my nano (the one with the clip) and put it in the pocket of the shorts. For headphones, I have tried a lot but now use Radiopaq ones from eBuyer. Often on offer at £2.99 a pair and they last a while, even when wet. I have tried more expensive ones and funky designs but they never worked for me.
In the winter I will wear a hat and lightweight gloves as the cold can hurt fingers/hands and head!
Also I use a 'loop' bottle which I grip when running, something like http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BRAND-NEW-...item232b99308f
I started running with Powerade, but you should only run with water which is what I have been doing for well over a year now.
Also for keys I use one of these: http://www.y-fumble.com/ they can be used for your phone etc... too.

    Trainers:
Go to a shop and get on the treadmill with cameras etc... I am a neutral footed runner so I cannot recommend a brand/range.
BUT, I do have a couple of pairs (and they should be replaced after about 500km each).
I wear Asics Culumus 14 one run and then Brooks the next, this was recommended by a friend and I have not looked back. I am getting on much much better with the Brooks, I tried Adidas before I was told my style of running, which I needed to do, as the they nearly killed me! I can upload the Blisters that they caused which was pretty much the whole of the sole of my feet!

As for weighing myself, I only do this on Fridays after the bigger runs. I know I enjoy myself on a weekend so Monday/Wednesday weigh ins would be pointless...

So, that is pretty much me. If I remember anything else I will edit.

I have one of those loop running bottles, was £2.50 from mountain warehouse. I didn't think I would get on with it but it's fine. I put half a tab of my electrolyte drink in, the same as I use on my bike.

My first run was in standard shorts and I found them really uncomfortable so went to the Asics outlet and bought some longer ones like cycling shorts without the padding. What they do have is a small pocket above your arse which is big enough for my spare phone (which is waterproof) and my key. I love the shorts I hardly know I have them on.

Across from the Asics discount outlet is a Nike outlet so I got a short sleeved lightweight top from their range plus they had a long sleeved version of the same on the clearance rail for £7 so I got that for when it's colder..

As for shoes, originally I just wanted any old pair to have a go at running on a treadmill so bought a £20 pair from go outdoors. Speak as I find, I'm not complaining about my feet after a run so am happy. This may change if I go for longer runs.

I've bought an armband for my phone (99p) purely for music but I can't see me using it if I'm honest. I'd rather something small that can be clipped on like yours. The missus bought me some sport sennheisers with ear clips last week but I haven't tried them yet. It's only 40 mins so I'm not really getting bored although it would be a good opportunity to catch up on some podcasts I suppose.

Thanks for the very extensive reply, I can refer to it when I'm looking at replacing or upgrading kit.

    Cheers,

    Malty

Sure, it took me a while to add to the kit after researching and been sold by something new.

I would add that it is good to put your water bottle in the fridge ready for the run (maybe the night before). The coolness of holding it actually helps to cool down your body.

You will get to the point where you find yourself not drinking as much on the runs as you get used to them, but I do recommend that when you do drink, take a small sip and spit the rest out. Drinking too much will give you a stitch and they bloody hurt!

I notice when I do my morning 10km on the trainer that the lap times go down as I go on.

Unlike running where you start quicker then get to a rhythm and then slow as you tire.

I'm finding the bike rides on the same days as runs are functional and there's not a lot of training benefit. I can see my heart rate isn't high enough and I would like to push on but my legs don't react as they do on a non run day. I find it much harder to get my heart rate up into the 160+ range and keep it there and seem to bobble around the 150 mark.

I want to go faster but my running legs seem to hold me back. It's evident in my average speeds too, usually 0.5-0.8 mph slower over the whole distance

decent improvement on Wednesday's time and I pushed on a bit. HRM went a bit screwy at 2.5 miles.

Managed to work harder to keep hr higher. Felt really good and I feel like my technique is getting better, e.g. breathing better and a longer more efficient stride.

5km tipped over at about 36.45 which I'm really pleased with.

Very happy and I feel really good.

    http://connect.garmin.com/activity/359609177

I mounted my edge to my watch strap using the spare bike mount that comes with it and a rubber o ring. Worked really well and I was able to glance at it without any effort.

For the record my first ever run was about a mile, had to stop a couple of times and nearly died when I got in.

Built up to 3km, then 5km then the odd 7km.
Eventually hit 10km and would add the odd one on here and there. Started to do a few 15km and thought 'I will do the GNR'

Now my regular runs are between 14-17 with a 21km once a month.

You build it up. For a year my average was 5:25 per km, now it's around 4:20

Stick with it. Do some park runs, aim for a 10km comp and go from there. I gave myself about 15 months training for the GNR and I'm motivating a mates missus at the moment who has web training for a year to do this one.

My only target not hit on the garmin is the full marathon.... I'm still debating it.

You get addicted. Even when your injured you still get out! Also never let the winter put you off..
The dark mornings are setting in (well at 5am for us early birds) and your not as awake as you like to be, but once you have put the first few steps down... Boom! Your in the zone

I have been carrying a few niggles for a while but eventually enough deep heat sorts it or you forget about it. Last thing I want to do is go to the docs for him to tell me to 'rest'.
