Microsoft has confirmed that August's free Xbox games for Gold subscribers are Crackdown and Dead Rising 2, as rumoured. What's more, the manufacturer's seen fit to add smaller-scale spin-off Dead Rising 2: Case Zero into the mix. Crackdown goes first - it'll be free from tomorrow till 16th August, when Dead Rising 2 and Case Zero step up to the plate. Neither game is rated for release in Germany, thanks to the latter's somewhat eccentric view of what's appropriate for public consumption, so German Xbox Live users get Shadowrun and Lost Planet 2 instead. Thanks for the heads up, Graeme.
Crackdown, of course, is one of Xbox 360's more respected cult successes - a carefree open worlder that casts you as an all-powerful agent, capable of leaping right over buildings and throwing cars around. Dead Rising 2 is a zombie survival affair that takes place in a glittery Vegas-esque mall, and sees you combining a huge array of objects to create some goofy/bloodthirsty weapons. Case Zero is a prologue to the latter which stars Chuck Greene, and takes place in the desert town of Still Creek.
Based on the boardgame of the same name, Shadowrun is a multiplayer-only class-based action title that straddles the gap 'twixt cyberpunk and fantasy. Lost Planet 2 is basically Monster Hunter mashed into Gears of War, with just the faintest peck of Battlefield - expect giant mechs, giant monsters and all manner of co-op chaos.
