    Default Media streamer recommendation.

    Hi:-)

My sister in law is looking for a media streamer and I'm trying to help out.

She isn't that tech savvy but is after a streamer to mainly watch Netflix, I'm thinking a roku 2, but don't really have any experience of off the shelf stuff, I've always used xbmc on various hardware., so I'm unsure what's the best option for her. Needs ethernet as her wifi is rubbish.

Are there any other options or opinions? Can

Western Digital Live 2, great bit of kit, Ģ69 if you shop around, i connected it to my router & TV HDMI, connected a 2TB on usb so i can download & send to the 2TB drive connected to it , no network set up, all windows 7/8 PC's can see it so it can be accessed from any pc in the house at the same time.top kit. supports netflix & the like, youtube internet too, it has wifi & ethernet so she would be sorted. standard remote & you can controle from ur phone with the free app.

Another vote for WDTVLive. Great bit of kit. I use it for streaming from my nas box over the electric sockets using powerline adapters. Mrs uses it to watch iplayer.

One thing that bugs me is that there is no itv player, 4od or demand five.

I contacted WDsupport to complain that their TV Live kit breached trade descriptions because it doesn't stream the basic uk channels. They responded saying that they don't claim their unit can stream live TV... Then they banned my forum account and deleted all my posts lol

Same here but I don't like that it grabs the cover & info for the film on the attached usb drive & not over the network.

It plays hd movies from my NAS over wi-fi which surprised me although my NAS is attached to my network by a powerline adapter I still thought it would struggle.

Mine pulls covers and info fine. Don't have USB plugged in. Just have to make sure network shares have write access for it.

Thanks, I'll have a check again when I get home tomorrow, it must have been sorted in an updated firmware at some point then as it wouldn't work before for me hence why I tested with a USB drive in.

As she's not a techie, I'd go for your first choice of the Roku - it just works, without needing any messing around. Plus if you mess with it for her, you can set it up with the US Netflix, which gives a bigger selection of programming.
