    I can get FW4.5 US or Japanese models here, seems to be plenty about. More incentive to buy one if its going to be the only way to hack for the foreseeable future.

    Does anyone know how the FW spoof works? If you spoof the US FW can you access the US games store?

    Don't think you can do that. The "region free" feature is just a patched version of your own NAND (whatever region that may be) which bypasses the region check for loading retail cartridges. As of firmware 2.0b1 anyway.

    A point of interest: if you have an old DS flashcart (that has not yet been blocked) you can install the gateway exploit, launch the gateway GUI, backup your NAND, enter emuNAND mode (i.e. to play newer retail carts without updating your real NAND)... you only actually need the red Gateway cart for the playing of ROMs.

    where best to buy a 3ds xl white that will have the right firmware to use one of these carts?

    good info, that puts buying a jap or chinese machine out then, kind of helps me make a decision quicker now I know I have less options.

    I bought mine from Tesco just hoping to get the right firmware. It came with a 4.4 version installed. That was 2 months ago, and was the red version with no games.
