Default Thinking of moving to the USA

I've been talking with the Mrs about moving to the USA - North Carolina (Raleigh)

I'm lucky enough to have a job that can travel as it is the same the world over, just wanted to ask if anyone else has done this and how it turned out / what do I need to consider.

I lived in the states for two years with my wife and two kids. It's a wonderful place to live and bring up a family, not sure if you have one but it's not a deal breaker. Standard of living is great, lots of great places to eat, depending on where you are better weather, we got snow but there much better at dealing with it, nice big houses and cars/trucks. Check the weather for NC, is it near the coast as I knew someone who used to live there over looking the ocean. However he told me that when the storms came in it was pretty scary. You need decent health insurance, that's why you see real old people working in Walmart or Starbucks as they have good health care. Simple rule of thumb bigger the company the better the health care package. Annoying things are how everything starts again! Car insurance, credit cards are a nightmare to get, you start at zero basically but you can quickly build it all up. I got a macy's store card with 100 dollar limit on it. My mate bought a house after a year. Get a social security number and your driving licence ASAP. Whatever you try to do, join a library, blockbusters, trying to get your credit going, etc they always ask you for either your social or driving licence number. It just keeps things simple. We would go back in a heart beat!

my sister lived in charlotte NC and her in laws live in Raleigh, that area got hit hard with the crash, so they moved over to houston, from what i understand its getting better over in NC now. great place to bring up kids, you get all the seasons because when its winter its properly cold and when its summer its blisteringly hot. decent schools out there. i had the chance to move to the states and still do because of having a lot of family over there but personally for me its a great place to go for holidays but i couldnt live out there but i know a lot of people that have moved over there since the 90s and they settled very well and wouldnt come back so its just a case of if you have experienced the american life and if you feel you could adjust to it

I think the plan would be to rent out my UK house for 12 months and rent over there for 12 months while we test run the environment and build up credit rating. All being well we would then sell the UK house and take the £70-£80k equity we have and use that towards buying in the states.

Good idea about joining lots of things to build up the credit rating quickly.

If I moved to the US, I wouldn't be able to go somewhere where everyone is superficial, such as LA or NY. I would like to go to Seattle. But then it rains more than it does here. So what would be the point...

Good plan, get to know the area build up credit score, etc. Do you have kids? If so and have a faith, all religious schools are private.

If you don't have a religion, you should probably get one. And don't get one that isn't Christianity.

Why North Carolina out of interest? Although I did just read the wiki page as it's not a place I am familiar with. My comment above is just based on it's geographical location.

The reason is based on where I have found a job advertised at a very large company that I know and wanted to stay on the East coast so it is easier for family to visit and for quicker trips home (more for the wife than me). I did have the option for a job based out of Chicago but the winters there are harsh to say the least. In NC the winters are Fairly short and mild in comparison.

Also the houses and areas look very nice with good schools and universities.

I'm not sure but I think you'll need to be sponsored by the company you intend to work for. I tried once as the company I work for have some places in America but they weren't interested in sponsoring anyone at the time.

You need to be sponsored for a work visa and have a skill or trade that is considered in demand (IT is one)

My plan is to go on a work visa is I can get sponsored and follow up in a year or so with a green card application.
