Help Getting no signal through the cable

    Guys,

I have recently had an extension at the rear of my house and a new room built into the loft. Whilst his was happening I ran some coax cable from my virgin box (brown one) on the outside of my house via a splitter up to the roof.. I then have another splitter that takes the coax to a tv point in the loft room and coax out the back of the loft room and into the rear extension. (hope you followed that)

So I now have a virgin point in the loft and one in the rear extension.

I already have tivo in the front of the house and I ordered a standard HD for the back.

When I plugged in the HD for self install it gave me the AP52 error.

I had a visit from an engineer yesterday who was the laziest cunt I have ever met.. he was beyond bored of his job and did a quick cable test and simply said that there was no signal coming through the cable and that the cable was not the correct grade to run the virgin signal.

I have checked all connections at the splitters and I am sire they are fine.. Could I have the wrong grade of Coax. I did buy the reel from ebay.. Does it need to be a particular grade?

How would I know.. what are my options

Have any of you done a similar thing?

    many thanks in advance.

I had a similar setup in an old property and it worked fine, although I got the engineer to leave me a load of cable so I didn't have the 'wrong grade' problem.

What splitters are you using (in/out dB levels)
    Do you have any attenuators?

    Thanks to rIKmAN

Hi mate, thanks for the response..

I wasn't aware that there were different quality splitters.. I'll check that.

I am sure this is the cable that I am using http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/100m-COAX-...item53e0835a1a

    Why would I need attenuators?

    Have you any cable left?

Try a short run from the box, without any splitters and see if it works. I find it hard to believe that the "wrong coax" would give no signal at all. If that works fine, try again where it goes into the splitter, then test again after the splitter... etc. Work out where the fault is by narrowing down where the issue is.

    2 Thanks given to Geko

Good idea mate.. think I'll give that a go.. think I may have crap splitters.

Geko's advice is good, narrow the problem down.

The dB levels should be wrote near the input/outputs on the splitters, and I'm no expert but from what the engineer told me attenuators are used to boost a degrading signal on long cable runs - there are more knowledgeable people than me on here regarding cable/sat etc though that can confirm or disprove that lol!

I also doubt it's the coax, so do what Geko says and you'll find the root of the problem and can go from there.

    Thanks to rIKmAN

Could you try attaching it temporarily at the splitter points to step away from the main box towards the second location and see if you can pin down where you lose the signal?

does the hd box work in place of the tivo?

remove the long feed extension to the loft from the splitter take the connector off, join the braid to the center core and then go to the other end with a multi meter and check you have continuity,. ie there is no breaks in the cable.
if there is no break remove the splitter from the downstairs feed (the main feed into the house, and use an f back to back to join to the upstairs cable.
if the box fails still, try removing the other splitter and again use an f back to back to join the cables.
this will roughly tel you where the fault lies.

an f back to back looks like this

i don't think it matters who suggested what first
infact as Geko says he mentioned it first , i was just adding a way how he can test what had been suggested,

Me too lol... after 50 years of logical faultfinding of this nature it's still the way i do things...
