Sony to launch online TV service on PS4 by end of year

Sony plans to launch an online, paid TV service by the end of the year, poised to hit the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3 and high-definition TVs, the Wall Street Journal reports. Sony has inked a deal with Viacom, the American media company, to carry Viacom cable channels on an internet-based TV service for Sony products, the report says. Sony intends to stream on-demand programming and cable channels online, and the service includes a "recommended programming" feature, partly influenced by content providers and partly based on an algorithm of a user's viewing habits, the site says. Viacom's channels include MTV, Comedy Central, BET, Logo, VH1 and Spike. On June 26, Sony renewed a trademark for "PlayStation TV," covering hardware and streaming services.

Yup - so that means just one or two providers in the US (and probably only in certain states) and as usual the rest of the world will undoubtedly by shunned by the big 'S'

Sony fanboys AND xbox fanboys were amused/pissed when MS's big pre E3 announcement was just TV SPORTS TV SPORTS for an hour, with no games shown, and rightly fucking so.

The Microsoft reveal was just that. E3 was where the games were shown. Why would MS show all the games BEFORE the games show? That would be a PR disaster waiting to happen...

I appreciate that they wernt going to show all their cards pre E3, but no body wanted to be told about their future games machine being able to record TV and use PPV and see no games what so ever, Even some generic graphics rendering to show the machines prowess would have got people a little excited for E3.

I dont care for it either but I think there is a market for a box that can provide the 2 services. I think with today's market, they are going to either offer a shit load of stuff for next to free for anyone to give a shit though, we all have PCs and we pretty much have got used to the services available and their shortcomings. Offering a service to do the same, all be it slightly better, smoother or with more choice is good, but if that comes at a high price people aren't interested.

They are both trying to make them the ultimate media centre with gaming. But with limitation on what apps you can run, it will be down to games as per usual. Xbox have the bigger titles listed but Sony are offering more value overall with no massive exclusive title yet announced.
