PC Windows 7 Freezing Randomly No BSOD

    Hey,

Got a rather unusual issue going on. Windows 7 Appears to be completely freezing at random points and I have to reboot the machine. I've done a bit of digging and it was quite a common issue with 64bit when SP1 was released. I have installed the "Hot Fix" but still happening. The issue can occur at any time and happens completely randomly.

I've already Run Prime95 on my CPU and stressed the life out of it for 6hours. No Issue.
I've Run Chkdsk and it did find some bad sectors but sorted them.
Run Memtest 86 for a night on RAM and no issues.

I'm thinking its some obscure windows error but I'm reluctant to rebuild.

No mem dumps, nothing unusual in event viewer.

    Suggestions?

I would still suspect the HDD. Had Windows do it loads of times even when it's checked the drive and repaired the errors.
Get a 3rd party program - I recommend SpinRite and check the HDD properly.

Also check the S.M.A.R.T details of the drive.

I'm confident replacing the drive will solve the issue.

Usually, a corrupt or screwy driver will throw a BSOD. Not being able to read from the drive properly will make Windows Freeze.

HDD or RAM would be the first thing in my mind. HDDs and RAM have a habit of passing diagnostic tests even if they are at fault, absolute PITA! I had one this week where I ran an advanced HDD tool and it passed, I rebuilt Windows and now it fails to boot again so I have an SSD to go in that PC this week.

Usually though I suggest a software reinstall if the person knows how to do it as that rules out software and leaves hardware to troubleshoot.

I've got HDTune Pro, I'll run that on it or give the one you suggested a go. I have an SSD, I may install WIndows on that and see if that's causing the issues.

Update, hard drive is on its last legs! Sectors galore are on the way out! backing up and getting this drive sent back! under 3months old!

    Thanks to Red Phoenix
