Help Anyone know of any good Roman Empire History books?

Preferably covering the Etruscan Empire and its conquering by Rome, through to the founding of Rome and then all the various republic periods and emperors? Always been fascinated by roman history and need a good book to read up on it all in order.

Not sure if this is the right period but Conn Iggulden has written a whole series of books called 'Emperor', rise and fall of Julius Ceaser. Works of fiction but all his stuff is very well researched. I haven't read these (next on my list) but I've just finished his 'Conqueror' series about the Mongols and they were brilliant.

    I found http://www.amazon.co.uk/Roman-Republ...Roman+Republic
to be very good. Was an easy read and gave a good backdrop to why a band of peasants would form an army and decide to conquer neighbours they are happily trading with.

I would strongly urge, neigh demand, that if you are to read a single book about Rome in any era, please read this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Claudius-Pen...rds=i+claudius

It is simply one of the greatest historical novels EVER written!

Not exclusively Roman but Killing Jesus is good. Obviously more about Jesus but there's a fair bit about Roman politics at the time.

yeah one of my favourite tv series of all time. shame about the main actor dying of cancer in the first series though and then being replaced, if he had continued on i reckon it would have been one epic series! the replacement actor was good but wasnt the same as andy whitfield

Try the tv series Rome also. Has an interesting insight into that era.
