Question Kitchen Top Wood Varnish - can it be used on chopping boards?

Got some boards that need "seasoning" as I understand it is called.

Previously, I kept a load of wood stain for our old kitchen wooded work top. Surely this is as suitable as some ludicrously expensive small tin of oil with chopping board written on it?

I can’t see why not. I have read elsewhere and tried other oils as advised, but I don’t get s suitable finish. The kitchen when installed and coated with this was incredible.

    Cheers.....Q

    Is it varnish or oil?
Varnish is like a skin on top which will get cut up as you chop food, allowing water and stuff to penetrate, fester and ruin the board.
Oil will penetrate the wood to waterproof and protect it so if it's oil I would have thought you'd be OK.

I just give mine a coating of cooking oil occasionally tbh.

I use danish oil on my solid wood worktops if that helps.

Don't use wood stain, that doesn't sound tasty at all.

    Just use some veg oil.

It is an oil, not a stain. And IF I READ THE TIN, it states suitabel for turned wood and one of the items is clearly a board and a bowl.

I will test on the reverse of the board and see. I jusr figured, if on kitchen work tops, where you might put food down on then possibly ok. I am now confident it is.

I would use a decent mineral oil or bees wax.

Pure bees wax is what I season my work surfaces and chopping board with, never had a problem.
Warming it up before use helps.
