    Default Wood burners......

Thinning of getting a small wood burner for our living room. Haven't a clue where to start or any idea of costs?

Anyone on here got one and can provide some info / tips on installation/maintenance etc?

I had one fitted a few years ago and never regretted it, kicks out a huge amount of heat

The installation is the expensive bit, think it cost just over a couple of grand for the burner with fitting.

Also don't forget you want a CO detector (the installers have to supply one I think, but do it yourself and its worth getting a good one for safety) and they'll need to knock a hole in a wall for ventilation if you haven't already.

You can block it afterwards if you want, but legally it has to be there.

In terms of self installation I'm not 100% on the regs though, so wont try to waffle about that side

Had a few of these over the years and as far as heating the house they are fantastic... if you have a cheap or free source of wood then it will pay for itself very quickly
One time I got a second hand one with a crack in the glass in the door for £160 and a friend helped me fit... already had a liner in the chimney so didn't have anything to do really (friend had the knowledge tbh)
I wasn't worried about building regs.. just made sure I had a CO2 sensor for safety

I would find if I shut the doors on the burner b4 bed it would still be smouldering in the morning and you could just chuck another log on e.t.c

I'm no expert but I know cutting corners with wood burners & installation is a big no-no. Not that im suggesting you would of course, Goose.
A guy just upped and did his own on our street and the shite existing in his unlined chimney caught fire - we ended up with three Simon Snorkels on the street and three houses on fire. Whatever caught fire up there spread to the rooves - it was like watching a movie on TV unfold. Sadly, he died in the fire. Could have been my family living next door. Scary.

Ive installed loads of woodburners in my time (I run a property maintenance company) a lot of people are jumping on the bandwagon for installing them and charging monstrous prices while theres no need.

A decent woodburner can be bought direct from ebay for under £300.

here a fleabay link to one Im fitting next week for a customer LINK
and heres the one Im going to put in my house when I get time LINK

Once your fire is opened up get a chimney sweep to clean it out (suprisingly cheap - aruopnd here they charge £30)
fitting it takes no more than a day. The most expensive bits are opening your fireplace up if needed then dropping a flue liner (if needed) down the chimney - if youve had a gas fire in previously then theres probably a flue liner in already so just use that one but if your fire has been used as an open fire before then you may get away without using a flue liner at all.

You only need a vent in your room if the burner outputs over a certain amount of KW but to be honest your best off having one no matter what as the stove works by pulling air into it as it burns so the more air available the better the burn generally.
if you can get your fireplace opened up off someone (or yourself) then board out the opening with fireboards (you'd prolly need one sheet of fireboard which costs about £10 then get it plastered or tiled or whatever finish your having then just lift your stove in place - obviously every job is different but it is something that you can do yourself if your a bit handy. Theres no reason why you cant do it all for under a grand.

Would really like a couple of these too. We currently have 2 gas fires that just send the heat straight up the Chimney and not into the room...
We have literally just finished decorating and put new carpets down... To have the mess now is a big no for the wife unless they could be fitted 'cleanly'.

As far as I understand we need a liner down the chimney and obviously the Gas capping off and the stove put in. Even just putting the stove in and stopping the draught we get at the moment would make the house much warmer without even having it on!!

As for the installation, we have white walls and cream carpets. If everything was covered very very well, would this be a clean job?

I should mention my figure above is fitting without a chimney - they had to knock a hole through a wall and install full ducting/flue etc so that's a worst case situation

I know with gas open flued appliances u can have up to 7kw before u need to fit vents. Under 7kw uses the advantageous air in the room. I assume its the same for open fires etc.

For the extra cost get a back boiler also added. this can pipe the wasted heat around the home and into your rads.

Get a professional in to do this though as already said

I remember a place I stayed at in the South of France.. some big old converted barn (large 3 story) he had done something like that cos when you lit the wood burner on the ground floor it would send warm air all over the house somehow..
There were like holes/vents in the stonework in all the bedrooms that just had lovely warm air pouring out of em when the fire was lit... very efficient

If id have had it in a chimney I would defo have done this.

Its impressive how much heat they kick out, and its good to know the excess isnt wasted up the chimney.

We live in an area with many. The house we bought had not had it used for 6 years. I went in and asked the local estate agents for reconmendations of chimney sweeps and specialists in these as I had no clue. They were really helpful and we got a local guy who has been in the area some 30+ years.

In short, tap the estate agents if it is a common feature in your area
They should have contacts for when buyers need to get things sorted for sales (or buyers)
    Ask Neighbours for reconmednations

We have had small shop open recently. They are charging more than double of this guy. The smallest wood burner they have in the window is 625, thats no lining or fitting or works to create suitable opening.

If you have the opening in place make sure you have suitable fire rated plaster
If you dont have the opening alreay (too mall or needs being made larger) there is likely to be a dregree of structural works needed. This costs
Our guy quoted an approximate 1k for New Lining, fitting and commissioning (as we have a second fireplce) Not sure how decent that price is. He charges 50 for a sweep, that included, taking otu cast iron stove, full sweep, resintatement of stove, reseal of flue to soffit of fireplace opening. Not bad, quick and more importantly clean. He also checked the condition fo the brick debris (as we do nto have a linining in that stack, and confirmed no spoiling

By no spoiling do you mean if he was to fuck your carpet up then he would have to fork out for a new one or take the cost off his bill?

PM me m8 as you know I am local to you and can give you some advice, i went down this road last year and researched the shit out of it, as previously stated UK made ones are best and I bought multifuel so I can burn wtf I like in it. Clearview are up there but the reseller near to us is not great, but town + country and woodwarm are owned by ex management of clearview and use similar airwash system. me and my m8s all bought one at same time and I can tell you depending on what you are looking for the strengths and weakenesses of each.
