    Default Unlocking iPhone4

    Hi all,

I'm coming to the end of my iPhone 4 contract on Orange and I'm wanting to unlock my phone without coughing up a £20 unlock fee. It's my phone, my contract will have ended, all subsidies on the phone have now been more than paid, so I should now be able to stick any sim card I like into it (giffgaff).

What's the best way of going about it? I'm JB'd on 5.1.1 if that helps, but looking to move to 6.1.3 as soon as the untethered JB is released, so ideally, any JB unlock methods will need to be compatible with that too. I don't wanna be stuck with a newly upgraded iOS and a freshly re-locked phone.

Is it possible or should I just begrudgingly pay Orange?

    Thanks,

    James.

if orange wont do it free cough up the £20 if you sell the phone later the unlocked version still fetches premium over locked versions.

fook jailbrake unlocking messing around with basebands too much IMO they never seem to work as well

    Thanks to Mobileman

just pay it its worth it in the end.
orange locked iphones are worth less than any other network locked iphone because of the pain in the arse they are at getting unlocked.

Cool. I'll speak to Orange about it.

Anyone know how long it will take? My PAC code is valid until a couple of days before my contract runs out so I wanna switch it as late as possible... Quick Google and some people saying it can take them weeks before they're unlocked?!?!

once you have put it in that doesnt matter. as long as you request it during your contract.

It's far better to have a factory unlock (ie, through network provider), but u can do it by upgrading your phone with a 'cooked' firmware using programs like redsn0w where the update goes through without baseband, however, u won't be able to update to anything other than the latest firmware cos Apple won't allow it (shsh check fails), and the newest ios7 is prob not jailbreakable yet.
But to go against what another user said, ultrasn0w unlock works flawless on compatible basebands, I used it for years with no problems.
Ps. Windows users can go with sn0wbreeze, does same job as redsn0w

I installed ultrasn0w from Cydia the other day. Couldn't find and settings for it so forgot about it. I've not activated my giffgaff sim yet so can't test it.

I backed up my 6.1.3 shsh blobs via tinyumbrella only a couple of weeks ago so hopefully I should be fine going to that version once the JB gets released into the wild.

I'll prob not end up selling it. If anything I'd prob give it my Dad but he's almost certainly gonna want to stick his Tesco mobile sim in it. I think it'll be worth £20 not to have the hassle of messing about with it further down the line...

If its locked to orange, then you need to get orange to unlock it.

Well I filled in the form on the Orange/EE website. £20 cost and the automated email says they'll get back to me within 20 days about unlocking it.

My PAC code runs out in 14 so my number will be off the Orange network before then. Will that matter? Or will they not be able to unlock it if I do that?

The phones unique identifier is the IMEI, on a locked phone the IMEI is how the network knows if it is one of theirs or not. The PAC is an authorisation code to port your number from the sim so this will not affect an unlock once it is in process.

Cool. I was thinking that they would have to send some sort of unlock signal to the phone allowing it to use sim cards of other networks.

I can't actually understand how it works aside from that? Do the networks have a database with all the imeis that belong to them, and ones that are unlocked, as a kind of 'allow list' for their network? Surely that would mean every network including foreign countries would need to be told of the changes? Or does it not ally to foreign networks?

In the case of the iPhone there are central Apple servers which dictate the lock status, the networks forward their unlock request to Apple who make the change and then when you connect to iTunes it will contact Apples servers and confirm the unlock for you (when you insert a previously blocked network sim card).

    Thanks to evilsatan
