Question How to enable 5.1 surround sound?

    Hi Guys,

How do I enable 5.1 surround sound in Windows 8? It is for my media centre. The sound works through the TV so now I want to get the surround sound working.

The setup is: Media Centre > Amp > TV/5.1 surround sound // All HDMI

I can get a picture but no sound

    Any ideas/suggestions?

You got the HDMI Audio driver installed for your PC? Mine comes from AMD as it's integrated into my ATI Card.

    Found this :

The problem seemed to be that the Catalyst drivers provided for Windows 8 by AMD do not contain the HDMI Audio drivers by Realtek for the HDMI Output. I managed to track down this fact using the vendor and device ID and then got the Windows 7x64 drivers for the ATI HD Audio -
Now 5.1 is selectable from the speakers under HDMI audio and everything is working fine:

Also at the end of the thread there is this post which I remember encountering on my Onkyo
I've just been having the same problem with only 2 channels appearing on my AMD HDMI device. The problem was being caused by my Onkyo receiver. I had HDMI passthrough enabled on the receiver. If I turned the receiver off before the TV, the PC only saw a 2 channel device (the TV) which is why the 7.1 option was missing. As soon as I disabled HDMI passthrough the 5.1 & 7.1 surround options appeared in the speaker setup.

I have an Audigy2 sound card.
The sound goes to the amplifier through this sound card, and the image goes through the graphics card. To activate or disable your sound via HDMI to the TV, do not go through the control panel. Go to the options of the graphics card, there you will find the option to turn on and off the sound via HDMI.
    I have helped

I'm waiting for the drivers to download at the moment, I'll give you all an update as soon as.

UpdateA little update before I go to bed. Sound drivers all installed, thank you for the information EvilBob.

Next issue, I cannot get into the setup of the Amp as the picture keeps going tits up; flickering. So I will try alterative HDMI ports on the amp and the TV, I will also switch out the HDMI cable from the amp to the TV and see if that solves the issue. If not the TV or the amp is f*cked
