US SIM cards

Not sure here or mobiles is the best spot but I'm off to the us with work for a few weeks and have mates out there that I'll be needing to call and don't want to incur extortionate roaming/data fees. Can anyone suggest the best payg sim with some data, I'll be in NYC if it makes a difference?

Just got back from the west coast and been using the $2 a day option from T-Mobile:

Not the fastest, but works well for emails, maps, web and the like without it costing the earth.
