Info Sony outlines PlayStation 4 hardware details, limitations at launch

Sony outlined a series of new PlayStation 4 details in a hardware FAQ released today, revealing new aspects regarding game installation, Blu-ray playback, and hardware limitations. Sony notes that all retail PlayStation 4 games will need to be cached to the PlayStation 4's hard drive, though gameplay can proceed during installation and subsequent software updates. Discs are still required for play afterward, and data access will be limited to pre-installed content. Players will need to carefully manage installs if they hope to maintain a large game library, however, as the console does not support external storage via USB hard drives or memory sticks. As was the case with the PlayStation 3, users can optionally swap out the PlayStation 4's internal 500 GB hard drive for increased storage capacity.

The PlayStation 4 also lacks DLNA support, eliminating client functionality for home PC media servers. In addition, the platform does not feature a music visualizer, and ditches support for dynamic themes and .mp3 playback. Media will be offered via Sony's Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited services, along with "other entertainment services that will be available on Day 1 before launch."

Sony addressed the console's one-time activation requirement for DVD and Blu-ray playback, noting that players can request a Blu-ray activation disc in lieu of a downloadable update. The update can also be installed via USB.

Regarding the PlayStation 4's Share button and video recording capabilities, Sony revealed that streaming, sharing, and screenshot functionality does not require a PlayStation Plus account. However, publishers may block specific gameplay segments from being shared, resulting in automatic suspension of recording during these sequences.

PS4 will not support YouTube uploads, stream archiving exclusive to Twitch

Sony revealed as part of today's comprehensive PlayStation 4 pre-release FAQ that the console will not allow content sharing via YouTube at launch, though support for additional video-streaming services is in the works. At launch, the PlayStation 4 will only be capable of sharing recorded video via Facebook, while gameplay footage can be streamed via Ustream or Twitch. Sony did not completely rule out the possibility of YouTube support being added in a future update, however, as it hinted that PS4 owners should be on the lookout for "further news on other services to come after launch."

Sony additionally notes that Ustream footage will not be saved for later playback. PlayStation 4 stream archiving is only available for Twitch users, and can be enabled via Twitch's website.

I have read somewhere DLNA, MP3 and uploads to youtube will be coming in later fw updates?

Still fucking stupid and a backward step from the PS3 as far as media playback is concerned

Not that I use DLNA or music playback on ps3

    Why?

Do you actually stream media to your games console or listen to music while you are gaming? Altho this will be coming in the future

Not sure I will be cancelling my pre order due to this, in fact paid for mine in full today

Shame about DLNA, I do use that a lot to watch stuff I've downloaded.

Will still be getting one though.

MP3, DLNA support to be added via future fw update

Though there have been a few missteps on Sony’s behalf from the recent FAQ post riddled with mistakes of no MP3 support, No DLNA support, and a few other features that are not available at launch. We were able to speak to a Sony rep today about if any of these features could be implemented in the near future and much to our surprise we have received a “Yes“. The future update that is in process to be rolled out shortly after the PS4′s launch(November 15th) will include the following detailed features listed below:

    • Legacy headset support
    • Mp3 support for not only in-game but non gaming as well.
    • Suspend and resume play feature
    • DLNA support for media such as (streaming Mp3, Videos etc.)

All of these features are set to hit PS4′s consoles by late 2013- to early 2014. Which we hope Sony will deliver sooner upon. From what we know these features are being packed in the 2nd forth coming PS4 firmware update. Also these details were hinted today when Shuhei Yoshida made a post on twitter stating that he had a discussion with other PlayStation 4 development team members about received feedback. With this news being provided Those these features are a definite step in the right direction. We were still unable to confirm future external hard drive support for media or game data would be supported later on. lastly we’re still waiting to hear if there will be future YouTube support for video sharing. What do you think of this good news do you think Sony still needs more features to claim the living room in this next gen console war? comment below let us know.

I have cracked an pre-ordered a Sony Playstation 4. I will probably do what I did when I bought the 2 and 3, play it for a week then offload it at cost to someone who will use it.

Wait a week after launch, you can buy mine!

With the PS3 I got one from shop.to or somewhere like that and it had nearly £100 off! Plus it came with Resistance and Casino Royal.
In a way I wish I had kept it as it had the memory card slots etc.. and those were sought after, but I honestly played it for a week before it went.
Resistance Fall of Man was gash online and I never had the money in the first place.

I waited far too long to get a PS3, then all of a sudden a massive price drop on the 60gb model. I still waited, then I read it was not supporting backward compact etc etc, paid a premium to get mine. Love it to pieces, all card and the lot.

June will still be the original release build.

Neither Xbox 360 or PS3 can natively play my mkv files... So PS4 not being able to either isn't such a big issue.

Plus Sony are bound to put that Cinivea copy protection shit into PS4 anyway... So even when it will be able to stream video, you'll not be able to actually watch much...

Maybe they will force MS to do same as a condition of the blu-ray drive too?
