Default iMac fault - any help?

A mate is having problems with his iMac:

    From a Facebook conversation:

His OS is now mavericks but apparently the problem started 2 weeks before he put that on.
He says he's already tried resetting the PRAM and SMC also tried to run hardware test when booting up and it just came back with error .2002D
It wont come on at all now

Started where he'd put it to sleep and it wouldnt come back out of sleep so he'd have to restart it.

    Any ideas guys?

has he got any third party devices attached, re: blutooth keyboard mouse?
Only in Britain….do we use the word “politics” to describe the process of Government. “Poli” in Latin meaning “many” and “tics” meaning “bloodsucking

Apparently, yes .. he has both a bluetooth keyboard and mouse attached.
But he says he's tried doing the same with wired keyboard and mouse from his old G5 and same fault.

No power or powers up to a grey screen and goes nowhere?

I kicked an iMac out of the Grey Screen of Death by literally threatening it with the Recovery.
I booted to it with Command-R or holding C, I forget which, so try both and then reboot the Mac.

    edit--
For that matter, try all of these -

    See if anything happens differently.

My guess is, Bluetooth was creating problems before, hence the error code, but since, something worse has happened.

This may sound weird, but has been known to work quite regularly with Laptops and PC's.

Power OFF the iMac at the plug, but leave plugged in.
Hold the power button down for 30 seconds.
Let go and leave for 10 seconds.

Power on at the wall and see if it boots.

Caused by static on the motherboard and the PC is in 'self-preservation mode'.
Holding the power button while earthed clears the static back to ground.

    --edit
Also bear in mind that the Maverick OS has made changes to the way the Power button behaves, but shouldn't be the cause TBH.

If he is getting no startup chime or fans whirring sounds like the power supply has gone in it. How comfortable is he with taking the screen off? There is a series of lights on the logic board that will tell you if its getting tricle power or not?

If no lights then he can get a new power supply from here Just needs to know his model. Or if its still in warranty obviously tell him to take to apple store or apple service provider

One caught me out just the other day after the great Storm of Jude.

Turned out the power cuts blew the fuse in the plug. Worth checking first.

Thanks for the advice Scottio, DejaVu I have passed it on.
He's just been on FB however and told me that the system powered on by itself (or a delayed boot from trying to power it on last night) .. at 3am this morning!

So it can't be the fuse but it could still well be the PSU.

If he's reset the PRAM I do it 4 times re: it reboots 4 times one after the other to clear it.
and then wont start remove the battery looks like a cordless phone battery and reset pram again.

what model imac is it as i get them in all the time and often end up with spares, if he needs a power supply etc

    Hi guys,

An update from my mate with the iMac problem:

ive just done that led test on the imac. only the first light is lit. Ive replaced the power unit today and its still not working.
according to the service manual that i found if the second light failed to lit then its the logic board

Is this right and if so what is his best option?

    Thanks.

Sounds like logic board is getting affected by heat to me if it's intermittent. Probably cold solder joints.

Found this info on the LEDs...

It's all a bit moot without info like date, model etc. even then it's vague at best, well done for persevering everyone!!!
