Only 460,000 Wii U sold worldwide in 2013

Nintendo is definitely in a bad way after it sold only about 160,000 Nintendo Wii U consoles in Q1 of 2013. Word has now surfaced that Nintendo only sold 460,000 consoles combined in the first six months of 2013. That means from January 2013 through September 30, Nintendo only managed to sell 460,000 consoles globally.


At the same time, Nintendo was able to sell 6.3 million pieces of software. Considering it only moved 160,000 units the first three months of the year, sales certainly improved significantly during Q2. Much of that sales improvement is attributed to the release of The Legend Of Zelda: The Wind Walker HD. What is clear is despite the sales uptick, Nintendo’s first party games including Zelda and Pikmin 3 have been unable to spur significant sales.


Nintendo reported an operating loss of $236.2 million that it attributes to advertising activities for the Wii U console. Nintendo was able to generate a gross profit of $631.4 million for the same six-month period. It’s also worth noting that much of Nintendo’s profit is attributed to a favorable depreciation of the value of the yen. That depreciation of the yen meant its foreign investments were worth more.

it's a shame that the wii U flopped so bad and that the game range is so poor.
i bought my wii U and i am totally satisfied with it , fantastically fun when the family come over with all the MII games ,
also getting a little tispy and playing Zombi U with my friends.
although the console still offers fantastic graphics and monster hunter 3 ultimate which is destroying my social life .


all in all i think a highly under rated console

still in 2 minds whether to get one or not for me and the mrs at xmas but apart from about 3 games theirs nothing i am desperate to play so will most likely hang on for the inevitable price cut again

It was too close to the Wii and for my money at the time, it was nto offering anything amazingly new.

I am keen to get one, but it still seems a lot for what you get so still keeping back.

I am waiting until these really take a considerable drop, I was tempted for a short while to try and get the Zelda pack release. But thought better still to wait,

After xmas I can see the Wii U dropping a lot in price. With the XBox and PS4 on the market to contend with they will have to do something. Those sales figures are shockingly bad. Not surprised though - only know one person in real life with a Wii U.

I'll buy one when Mario is out and I want to do Wind waker again and catch up with a few other games, but I dont think there is much else for the average punter they would miss if they had a Sony or MS console. It's sad to say it but the mass appeal of Nintendo's style seems to have expired with the mass market.

i managed to get mine for £200 , it was pre owned but pretty much brand new with a box and 12 months garentee ,
any one thats thinking of getting one i would suggest getting the pro pad aswell its well worth it.

i agree though it is a shame there is not more hype about the console as it is a fantastic thing .

Any idea why they didn't? I remember seeing an advert on TV one day advertising it, it was the first i'd heard about it and it had already been in shops for a few weeks.

Pretty much everyone i know had a Wii, but I know 1 person with a Wii U. I guess the Wii was a gimmick really and did so well because millions of non gamers and families bought it as the first of its kind, but now the fad has long worn off. I know I haven't touched our Wii for years, and neither have most other people I know. Families and non gamers won't buy the Wii U and there's nothing special enough about it to warrant the majority of people paying out for it.

Major flop and I reckon Nintendo should be looking towards their marketing manager for the fail.

TBH, I see Nintendo throwing in the towel like Sega did with Consoles. Competing with Microsoft or Sony must be near impossible!

Nintendo's marketing in the west has always been lacklustre, with the Wii there was so much excitement about it they really didnt have to do shit, it was on all the news shows, tech shows, in bitch mags, health mags, OAP weeklys, peoples friend and so on, you couldnt fucking move for wii info, and thats before you even consider the videos of bitches in their knickers doing the hula games on youtube.

Although Nintendo themselves said that the wii didnt really work as a successful console as the games to console ratio was far too low, they seemed to acknowledge that a huge percentage of people were only playing wii sports and maybe a few other games and with the initial 3rd party push with the wii-u they seemed to know what they were doing, but that didn't really go anywhere in reality, EA bailed and many of the other publishers games were bashed for either being inferior to PS3/360 versions, or not being significantly better.

I cant see Nintendo giving up hardware and publishing for Sony or MS when their consoles are so fucking expensve and Nintendo wouldnt have enough control over things like online multiplayer. They would not allow their titles to be used like current online titles do on xbox live. Nintendo make games for kids essentially and they just happen to usually appeal to all ages, they aren't going to have spunkstains telling each other to go fuck themselves over the mic on MarioKart 8.

He's never actually played it himself. Spent the first night he got it with the lads round, trying to get all 4 controllers to connect in-game on Mario kart (worked in menus) after an hour we gave up and stuck his SNES on and played the original instead...
