Default Help recovering data from a mac book hard drive with a PC.

Hello and looking for some advice. Have been asked to help a friend with a mac laptop that has a hard drive problem, the mac is quite new as it is only just out of warranty. Am looking to get a few data files off the drive and the cd key for microsoft offiice. The drive will be removed from the laptop and was wondering if it were possible to read this data with a win7 or vista or Linux computer. Is the hard drive readable in a pc as a slave? Is there a program such as magic jelly bean that will glean the microsoft office key. Thanks.

You won't be able to read the drive from a Windows machine, unless you can get OSX running in a virtual machine. Best option would be to stick it in another Mac (either a Mac Pro or in an external caddy).

There is software to extract the MS Office key but it only works for 2004 & 2008. Office 2011 encrypts the key making it unreadable. You can grab it from http://mac-product-key-finder.com/

    Thanks to stimpy

I found this regarding reading OSX HDD in Linux:

Or testdisk should be able to do it for you. I am not great on Macs, really can't stand them.
