I've recently taken up scuba diving so I was thinking of getting the GoPro camera. Thing is they are so damn expensive for what they are. Does anybody have any recommendations for other action cameras or are the GoPros worth it?
Only alternatives I have any knowledge of (through mates discussing) is the Drift Ghost but particularly the IronX - this is the one that is being copied everywhere by the Chinese from what I can gather.

I use a Drift and prefer it to GoPro due to the streamline shape. Not much in it though between them, generally people seem to prefer one to the other (like canon or nikon arguments) but actually either will be a good choice.

I use a gopro 3 black and it the best thing ever. I use it at 720 setting 120 frames a second so I can have good slow motion of cycling videos. I also use it air born on a quad copter I have used some cheep ones that claim to be 1080p but come no were near the clarity or vibrance you get from it. How it reacts to lightchange is also fast and smoth.

i have a gopro with the waterproof housing for shallow training dives (im a BSAC instructor and TDI inspiration rebreather mixed gas diver)
its just about ok but suffers badly with low light - which pretty well counts it out for most uk dives
also, i would forget about cameras and such for a while yet - get your skills up for a few months, its amazing how fixated on toys novice divers become while they quickly and quietly slip into the 'indecent pit' and end up in a life threatening position
I got the gopro hero 3 black edition for my trip to the maldives earlier this year and it's awesome. You will need something to hold onto it or to strap it to for diving. I went with a floaty handle and that worked great but also had the head strap. I didnt use the head strap for diving cos I looked a right nob in it You will also need a red filter for it otherwise you will lose red light when diving and colours look a little lack luster without it. The case that comes with it is fine for diving but you do get a bit of warping at the edges. The seperate waterproof housing for diving eliminates that but it's extra cost. HTH
