Anyone done Arduino?

I know its not strictly the best place to post this but no-where else really fits!

Anyway, I am looking to buy an Arduino + Starter kit as an Xmas pressy. However, I am not sure what to get... I know there are cheaper copies and different types. Just looking for advise for a present (for a novice)

What do you think they're going to use it for? You could go for a cheaper one like the UNO and a breadboard, jumper cables and a few other bits to get them going. Or raspberry pu or beagle bone black if you want something else?
