    Default ps3 fan full on

    Heres the story,

Brought a YLod ps3, When the power button was pressed 3 beeps and a quick flash of the power light, reflowed it using proper methods no hair driers and other junk, It now boots to dash and can use games, watch br etc, but the fans ramp up really quick, so stripped it down checked where the new heatsink compound was on both the chips and the heatsinks getting a full face to face patten, tried again getting fast fans, brought two copper shims to go between the faces, re-compounded all faces and rebuilt, same results.

It's my first ps3 i've had the pleasure to play with so have i missed anything ?

checked the heatsink pad on the south bridge that is touching the mating faces and have renewed the pads on the four little chips that go on their own little heat sinks.

Tried another reflow just incase, made no difference.

They air blowing out the rear is not warm so its no too hot.

I'm thinking the chips heatspreader the metal part bonded to the chip, this must not be contacting the chip correctly.

Think i'll stick to xboxes, I know the idiosyncrasy on them.

    Ted

Its a simple fix you need to remove the heat spreaders as there is a compound underneath them you need a really thin spudger to do it

Be careful as there are some really small components around the chips that easily come off

once off they should look like this just spread new compound on top replace heat spreaders and rebuild

Kill it, man was that paste stuck, got one Off carefully cutting the glue all the way round, then other one was a different story, see picture, spent a good hour carefully and gently picking up the corners and the last two lifted and one decided to pull the Top of the chip with it. Oh well live and learn.

No, read somewhere not so reliable, it wasn't necessary, well I now know it is. :-D going to have a look through my reballing jigs night have a ps3 one, if I find one can these chips be swapped or is there some thing that ties them to the console?
Lesson learned the best way to learn is by fooking up.

Heat spreaders are coming off my PS3 this afternoon.
I didn't know they even came off. Explains why my fan does it's nut too. Reading everywhere else says to replace the paste on the top of the spreaders only. Not mention that they are just covers!

    Cheers lads.

Didn't get round to it the other day, so decided todays the day...

RSX IHS Off. A bit nervy when I was prising it off, but it popped cleanly using a bit of card and a butter knife.
    IMAG0034.jpg
Now to find my spudger and see if I can get the CPU IHS off. Not looking forward to this one!

    --edit
Any suggestions for a CPU Heat Spreader that appears to be welded on!?
    IMAG0035.jpg

    --edit2
Scrap that, after lots of swearing and grunting and getting the hump, I got the cunt off. Think I've destroyed it in the process... BRB.

Now feel like this isn't the way to go kids.

    2 attempts. 2 dead PS3s.

Bit annoyed with myself as it was my 'special one'.

Man I feel your pain. Got to be another safer way, next time I'm going to use heat, and try melting the glue On the cpu with acetone or isopropanal,

you have to use heat. No other way... the CPU one is a real tough nut, but if you have a solder scraper you can mould that to do the job.

Well... looks like I've got an RSX chip here if you want/need it BIG-TED?
From what I've read, fucking the CPU is worse than the RSX as it's paired... (thanks for that AD!)

I did two using the same method and NO heat.

I just used a razor scraper(one of those tools for removing paint from windows) and a bit of time and patience. Just keep working around the edges slowly and it will come off eventually.
