Outside office

Evening,

I am planning on building a wood structure 5M x2M or 5x3 and using as an office, do i need planning permission to do this?

Sounds like a shed!

May depend on how tall it is. I build a multi room shed out back and someone rang the Council when they came round they said it was fine because it wasn't over 7ft in height .

Yeah, no higher than 2.5m which is approx 7ft and no sleeping areas. Other than that as long as not too big you be fine.

Also Keep to using wood as think rules are different for Perminant structures i.e. Built with bricks ;-)

think best thing to do is to phone the council and ask them what you would need planning permission for.

My dad had an single story extension built on the house and as he had a garage that was fixed he was told he would need planing permission unless he made the garage shorter. lucky it was slab sides and was able to shorten it easy enough. council was happy then.

I'd do this, because there are also rules about where it can go with regards to boundaries dependent on materials used and stuff like that. So if you can get the planners to give the thumbs up first it could save potential hassle from a jobsworth later on.

It shouldn't be anyones business what you do or don't do to your own property but the government have mastered the art of fucking everyone over who is actually trying to improve their standard of living. Even getting the neighbours reporting you!

It's fine to let your garden grow wild and look like a fucking jungle but don't you DARE improve the fucking thing!

Building regs / permission vary from Council to council, so probably best to give your local council a call.
I'd not use my own name at that stage, you just want to get a feel. Last thing you want is them popping round.
I'm going to building on my land again soon, but they won't be hearing about it from me.

i built a summer house in my garden 4.5m x 4.5m and approx 2.3m in height and was told at the time (by a friend who does this for a living) that because its made of wood it falls into a completely different category and as such is not considered a permanent structure, not sure if thats 100% or not tho

I built a half brick half wooden shed at my old house under the idea it was permitted development, I sold the house and moved and a neighbour told me the new owners had to modify the shed because of the brick and the height, apparently it was 6" too tall, but they got around it by building raised beds around it and using the roof to collect rainwater I did get a letter a few months after they bought the house but to tell you the truth I had more to worry about and binned the letter

Final question what software would you recommend to draw my plans with and get a 3d representation that is free not autocad as that looks very tricky to use and I'm no architect

Yeah use google sketchup but as usual with installing any google product be wary of there poor data protection policies and use a clean formated pc with no access the the internet to be on the safeside ;-)

Another question what alarm system would you recommend for this I would ideally like a network based one. I plan to get some more foscams for surveillance but was wondering if there is a network based alarm system which i can access via the iphone?

I use a combination of IP cameras rigged to a server with BlueIris software and also have the BlueIris app on the iPhone - pushing out alerts via the app and email as soon as motion is detected.

mPort (you connect the sensors to this. Buy multiple ones depending on how many sensors you want. Mine is rigged up to 1x Door sensor, 1 x Motion Sensor and 1 x Temperature).

The free Ubiquiti software can be installed on server/pc and it will alert you via email (depending on what custom rule you have set up).
