Default Warning for 3DS flash card / region free hack users

Just a quick heads up for anyone using a 3DS flashcard, or anyone that's considering the recent region free hack.

The gateway team, in their wisdom seem to have programmed some sort of kill switch into their software which has been reported to have killed consoles.

This kill switch activated only in clone cards the R4i Gold, 3DSlink, and the Orange 3DS, which all run on 'stolen' gateway code. This also applies to the region free hacks that work with certain DS flash cards.

If you have a gateway card and only use their official software then you should be ok, apparently the kill switch is only present in the latest beta update for the card.

    UPDATE
Since the gateway firmware went beyond its beta, it seems the kill switch has either been removed, or tamed as the bricking seems to have stopped.

I am thinking of getting a 3ds XL to get me Mario fix as missing the little plumber.

Do these cards work now and what firmware etc should I be looking at for an 3ds XL etc?

the DS has to be 4.5 or lower (current is 7.something) so you need to be looking at old stock, find someone with one they haven't played for about a year and you'll be ok but its very hard to find one accidentally.

Here in China theres plenty on the ebay equivalent, I have no idea on the UK.

What do they allow you to do, do you just load your backed up games onto a SD Card and play them from there.

If bought a gateway card now would they upgrade the firmware on it so that the new exploit would be on there or would it need a new gateway card?

The new exploit could work but its not confirmed yet, no proof of concept has surfaced yet regarding roms, so I wouldn't say its going to work. There's no reason why it couldn't, but that doesn't mean it will happen. The gateway team are a funny bunch.

As for what you can do, you can run any rom out today and also eshop rips but very few have been released so far. The newest gateway firmware can also run homebrew, but there isnt actually any (worth bothering with at least)

this is a nice site to see whats about there at the moment.

I was gonna write up a sticky for all this but waiting on the new exploit before I bothered as it could change everything.
