MAC book login problems

Anybody know how to get around forgetting the login password for a mac book?? Can't boot into it as can't get past that login in. I don't have the discs either.. looking at Google it looks like some command line input is required?? Anyone know a simple way? Step by step would be fab if possible.. Thanks in advance

Depends on the OS. For Snow Leopard and before you can boot from install CD (download and burn on another mac), Lion and newer has a recovery partition to boot from, although I've not had any first hand experience with it. The answer should. A well documented online though, I would look for you but I'm on my phone, sorry.

You are right but the family member who was having the problem found the password written down somewhere... doh. It doesn't pay to be helpful sometimes lol. Thanks anyway
