3G Signal Boosting - The cheap way.

A mate of mine lives in the middle of nowhere in a Mobile Home (It's a caravan, but he prefers mobile home).

He gets hardly any 3G because it's a really shit area - but it does exist. His phone is capable of HSDPA, but usally defaults to 3G unless he walks a mile up the road towards the tower.
He only really wants to use his PC from his phone for surfing the internet. If he could somehow strengthen the signal he gets on his Three UK Mobile phone, all would be good in the world.

Is there any kit he can strengthen the signal from the Mast nearest to him, like some sort of gadget he could buy (cheap) or build - maybe a satellite dish? To improve his internet presence?
I know nothing of such things and he's emailing me (when he's out and about) things like this -

Will this type of thing work or should he just swallow a £150 lose in getting a proper gadget for the job - any suggestions?

If its flat then why not set up a point to point WiFi link?

Done the mesh things with WiFi but never with a 3g dongle though.

Its flat, but he's 3 miles or so from the mast. See Google map

So, if the Mesh works for WiFi, a similar 'Red Neck Style' contraption could work then.

lol... If he's in a 'mobile home', why doesn't he just move it closer to the tower?

I made a 'cantenna' so I could get a better wifi connection at work (not that I needed it, I was bored). I didn't notice any difference but it might be worth having a pop with a 3G dongle before outlaying any proper cash.
