Looking at the pics/stats for F5S it mentions Dolby output but doesnt seem to have any optical or coax audio outs for connecting to an amp. I take it all sound is from the left/right analogue or HDMI. Seems strange it would miss out these outputs .

it comes through the hdmi
I went with a Cloud Ibox 2 for this exact reason - it has an optical out to plug into an amp
Ordered an F5S after reading the specs and it says it has spdif / coax then couldnt see it on the pics. Good excuse to buy a new amp even though its a decent one I have. Could always look for a different box but didnt want to pay too much with the impending end of certain uses of these boxes.
i run my f5s through my pioneer amp just using the hdmi. sounds impressive on the tv channels that broadcast ac3 output
Im sure the sound will be impressive through HDMI its just not all amps have HDMI in/out in them. It states in the specs F5s has coax/spdif outputs but it doesnt.
I dont know if I can go back to stereo soung through analog :-)
Yamaha Amp I bought was just as HDMI was getting put into amps but should just bite the bullet and buy a new one now .
brianbri: sorry for my original reply. can your amp not "up mix" to surround sound. i suppose it really depends on how old your amp is /specs.
Its just the lack of a digital out from the F5s that im needing. Havent set the box up yet but may be able to put it through an old sony Dvd recorder which upscales the picture from scart to HDMI . I have a Yamaha DSP-AX759SE and its a decent enough amp. Will see what happens when I get round to installing box.
Nothing would up mix a stereo track to 5.1 - at best you'd just get matrixed Pro Logic with a mono rear channel.
Why not send it back as it doesn't match the advertised specs and get one with the right output?
My old amp doesn't have any HDMI inputs either but it has 2x 8 channel inputs which you can use from a Blu-ray player for the HD audio stuff.
