There are only two copper wires usually from pole to house. If I remember right only 2 and 5 on the wall box need a connection so long and both ends match. Though its donkies years since I did one.

You also need '3' if you want the phone to actually ring LOL so use 2 - 3 - 5

If you are running the extension from a BT type master socket you can follow this video: (">

You only need the bell wire on 3 if the extension socket you are fitting doesn't have a capacitor.

the master socket should have a faceplate that can be removed to reveal the test socket, on the face plate you should see numbers (1) 2 3 4 5 (6) (1 & 6 may be missing) connect the blue wire to 2 & the white to 5. if the socket only has A&B the A=5 & B=2

if all of the phones are new less than 5 years old you will not have to connect the bell wire 3. 4 is the earth and has not been used in the uk since tone dialing, most phone are designed to be used anywhere in europe, the uk os the only country that has capastiors in the sockets, so the manafactures put the caps ring generators in the phones.

    hope it helps

The earth on 4 has nothing to do with tone (MF) dialing or pulse (LD) dialing. Its there for PBX functionality, specifically for recall/hold.

In fact all replies are right but all phrase it differently I've been a comms engineer for over 50 years and all the varieties of
replies show me is how things have changed..
Your confusion probably stems from using a cable with different colour codes to the accepted ones.
I expect you have it sorted now..
