Default New HD channels on terrestrial TV

Ofcom is today creating the opportunity for TV viewers to receive up to ten additional high-definition channels through their rooftop aerial.

The new capacity will be made available on digital terrestrial TV (DTT) by using airwaves freed up by the digital switchover, located at 600 MHz, and could triple the number of HD channels currently available on the platform.

Ofcom will award the licence to run the new ‘multiplexes’ – the infrastructure needed to broadcast the channels – to transmission company Arqiva, the sole applicant for the licence.

The BBC has already expressed interest in launching new HD services. These and other channels could go live in some parts of the country by early 2014.

The move from analogue to digital TV, successfully completed at the end of 2012, cleared two frequency bands for new uses. Following consultation, Ofcom decided that one of these bands should made available for additional DTT capacity on an interim basis, as originally proposed. The other was recently auctioned for 4G mobile services.

I wonder if we will see an 'SD License Fee' and a 'HD License Fee' ... Used to happen with B&W and Colour TV's

There will be nothing but repeats on all of them.
One of them is going to be a HD Beebies channel.... waste of time...

They should have at least had an HD news channel about 5 years ago.

I bet there are 10's of thousands of people in the UK who still pay for a b/w tv licence even though they have colour, I'm sure the last b/w tv sold must have been back in the 80's.

If they do this SD/HD licence then chances are most will just pay the SD and say they don't have HD, what your saying does make sense.

If you have a BW licence they send an offficer round every year just to confirm that you don't need a colour licence. Apparently there are over 100 still in use in the Bristol area.

I think they take the piss making blind people pay for a TV licence in the first place.

I agree..... what a piss take making the blind pay for a tv licence when they can't fully use it.

Would it really hurt to allow those with sight impairment to be exempt.
