    Default Anyone fix receivers?

I have an old receiver and I think the power supply has gone.
I dont want to spend much on repairing as a new setup is 150 quid with dish.
    Anyone repair these?

Also, I have a couple of the old videocrypt receivers. Worth anything to anyone? Museums? Anyone, lol...

If you think the power supply has gone wouldn't the first step to see if you are getting any juice out of it or try the receiver on another power supply?

    Thanks to beerman

As det suggests the power supply is internal.

ive no expertise, but can only say that the led screen was acting up and the machine started making a high pitched sound, and now it only makes the sound but doesnt power up...

@det cheers buddy, will follow uo

Apologies, assumed it was an external power supply. You know what they say about assumptions

it sounds like a cap has blown, the high pitch noise and the failing led is a sign of that. if you send it to me ill sort it pal

    righteo

so i have a couple, neither will switch on now

    Manhattan DSR2500 APCI

This one still makes a screeching noise when turned on, but I cant figure out which cap it is coming from...
(edit: having unplugged the white ribbon type cable the noise decreases, to almost a fast ticking noise, does this still sound like a cap?)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wArbh9Cs5cw&

    Techsan TS4000CI
This one was the more recent receiver, and wont do anything now

Any pointers on how I could diagnose failed caps would be appreciated...

Lol, yeah I thought so too but want sure if it was glue of some description. The white stuff is also on the side of the adjacent cap. I tried picking it off but it is hard and didn't want to damage the cap if it wasn't at fault...

    Thanks to Zippeyrude

If you look at the similar caps next to it..they seem fine...so I assume that is the problem one..I may be very wrong tho ...

Is there a part number on the PSU PCB? I had similar recently with a network switch that failed - I had a look on Google and found a match from RS that was just a drop in replacement? I'm shit with a soldering iron so undoing a few screws was much easier for me

It turned out the Delta PSU in my case was known bad (i.e. cheap caps which don't last too long).

In that video something is scorched near the big cap / green resistor.

    Thanks to reverend

initially I thought it might be the cap with white gunk on it until I saw it on the ajoining cap to the top, but it may still be that cap because we cannot see if it has bulged or not so maybe try remove the gunk.
one way to test the caps is to plug your soldering iron in, turn the box on, wait while soldering iron is hot and then touch the top of each cap with the soldering iron and see when the noise stops. if it does not change at any point then its not the caps

The white gunk isn't from the cap though is it? It looked like some kind of heatsink compound.

Look for a cap with a bulge.

From what you have said, It definitely sounds like a PSU fault. And most of the time a capacitor is responsible.

Its a form of resin glue they use on pcbs. Common.

Can you not get any better high res images? Need to get in closer to inspect it.

Also bare in mind not all blown caps pop upwards... Some blow from the bottom too.

The white stuff looks like it has been blobbed on, as opposed to oozing from the cap.

I've looked at all of emails and none appear buldged. Only one I can't see the silver top of the fat cap

Will post some Hi res pics later when I get in

    Cheers fellas

    Thanks to Zippeyrude
