Help Freesat and Forign viewing - Want to mimic inlaws set up

Father in law used to use an independent who has not fully retired.

He (father in law) has two dishes, and recently (shortly after the switch over) he had some work done.

These two dishes go into one Humax box, one dish gets foreign channels (half Spanish and also Russian & French speaking in the house) the other is the freesat.

Now, as I cannot utalise the expertise of this guy and my father in law has no clue (nor do I) what do I need to get the same set up as him?

So I need some input to
    Dish(es)
    Costs of hardware

They are less than 1/3 of a mile away, so I don’t forsee any reception issues.

I speak no other language, Missus Spanish and French and the littl’un, being spoken to in English and Spanish. We are keen to get the same TV options as the Mother house.

If need be, fire questions back, I’ll try and answer.

    Cheers…..Q

You have many options. You can use the two dishes. You can use a multi-lnb (dependant on the sats he is receiving) or you can use a motor. As it only goes into one box, I see no benefit to the 2 dishes and would probably get a motor. Although I setup a multilnb dish, so that the channels switched quicker.

With the multi lnb and the two dishes options. You will need a diseqc switch and more than one lnb. With the motor, you don't.

Before I go into any further detail, you need to find out what satellite he is pointing to for the foreign channels. Also... Is it free to air channels or a subscription? How big is the second dish (non-freesat)?

I'd also probably choose a different box to the humax.

    Thanks to Geko

Geko, thanks. I will take a picture. I know it si not a motor. both static. They are also both about the same size. He had them for ages, one never worked (or was not hooked up) it was only the guy who said, I can connect that up you know.

Everything is free to air, no subs.

I do not see us doing this, but we were keen (like he) to be able to record as well.

Happy to consider different from Humax, but I am keen to get some knowledge so i can get a price on exactly what I need/require and not get hoodwinked due to my niavity.

Recording adds more to it. A motor wouldn't be a good choice and if you wanted to record a channel while watching another, you will require dual lnbs.

Have a look at a VU+ Duo or Solo. They will do what you need plus give you an option to do much more than FTA channels.

It sounds to me like he has one dish aimed at 28 degrees for the English and the second dish aimed 13 degrees for the foreign channels.

They will more than likely be connected a DISEqC two way switch to feed them to the receiver.

QfanatiQ...have a look here to see what is available FTA on 19.2e:-

    http://en.kingofsat.net/freqs.php?&p...q&filtre=Clear

    and 13e:-

    http://en.kingofsat.net/pos-13E-fta.php

Do you recognise any of those channels?

If it's 28.2e & one of the above satellites you want, then you only need 1 dish (60cm) & 2 LNB's on a bracket, fed to your receiver through a DiSEqC switch (as mentioned abvove).

It is just about possible to get 2 LNB's on a $ky mini dish, but it's a bit of a bodge as the LNB's have to be gaffa taped together.

    Thanks to fossil

    I have an 80cm dish with a multi lnb. I receive 13e, 19.2e and 28.2e.

Gives me a ton of european channels and all the freesat channels. I have dual lnbs and 2 diseqc switches to enable me to record.

    Where's West Berkshire?

I know Clubber Lang on here had a dish installed at what I thought was a reasonable price. He is in Slough I believe.

Slough is close(ish) perhaps a bit far for an independant. You have Berkshire (Reading counccil) and West Berkshire (Newbury) Council. Sopugh has its own with I think Windsor and Maidenhead between us.

What I dont know about local councils aint worth thing!

Ha Ha. My parents local council is Windsor ( I think Windsor and Maidenhead separated). I am from Slough originally. But live in West London, now.

Get a few quotes for a multi lnb setup from a few satellite suppliers. I did mine myself and think anyone with a bit of technical skill could do it. But it's not something I enjoy at all. And would prefer not to do it again. I am probably going to stick a motor on the side of my place. It will be the 4th satellite I've put up. And I've hated doing all of them. I'm far from a pro, so it takes me a little while to hit the sat.

Windosr and Maidnehead planning and Building Regs is the same, if perhaps then rubbish etc is sperated. West london, get you, we used to be east.

I am not sure I want to tackle this myself. I'd rather get all the dish and mulsti point cabling done. I want to get it intially set up, but with the possibility of extending to another few rooms when we get works done.

Money is always needed for other things by the time we are ready to alomst hit the button.

    Cheers.....Q
