Boot mgr is missing -vista

Hi chaps,

I'm having a crap day today. LOL.

So i now have another toshiba laptop 'runing' Vista. However immediately after POSt, I get the message Boot Mgr is missing - press ctl alt del.

I've had the drive out and there is the recovery partition (*.WinRE) and the rest of the drive is blank / formatted. However i cannot get it to boot to the recovery console. Is there a way to make this bootable? If not i'll need a Vista DVD.

It needs Vista back on it, does anyone have a vista dvd they can up somewhere for me. I've got the key on the bottom of the laptop. (normally i'd put Win7 on it but not an option right now.)

Which Vista do you need? Do they know that they have somehow formatted the drive or deleted it's contents??

At post/just after try pressing F10 or F11. On Compaq laptops this boots them into the recovery console where you can do factory restores. If you are Lucky Toshiba may be the same

Forget that. I just did a quick Google, try this:
Warning: All data on the hard drive will be erased. Back up any important data before proceeding. Make sure the computer is connected to a power supply and do not switch it off or restart during the process.

• 1) Hold down the power button for ten seconds to switch off your machine
  
  • Please note: Holding down the power button on the machine forces it to switch off. Any unsaved data will be lost.
  
  
• 2) Press and hold the zero key and at the same time, tap the power button once to switch on your notebook
• 3) When the machine starts beeping, release the zero key
• 4) When prompted by the warning screen, select Yes to continue with the system recovery
• 5) Select Recovery of Factory Default Software and click Next
• 6) Select Recover to out-of-box state and Click Next again
• 7) Click Next to Start the recovery

Toshibas (Vista and above) are usually recovered by accessing the advanced boot menu then selecting repair your computer and choosing faxctory restore but without hte boot manager I don't think you will get that far. Where did you find that info mate?

I found those links after i'd posted but thanks again evil. Got them downloaded and now have a usb bootable vista, which i guess will be useful in the future.

All up and running agin now, just have to get all the drivers!

Slim drivers is good for single use but if you work on computers a lot then get driverpack solution from drp.su and make a USB out of it, will update all drivers in one go. Usually usb3 is the only driver you need to install manually.

Just looked at that and it seems ideal. My only problem is the full version is only available as a torrent, and i don't do torrents.

Anyone got a copy i can grab?

It's a legal and legitimate torrent with a lot of seeders, just download utorrent, run the file and it will download for you. My upload speed is 0.38 mbps so I can't up for you

Seen evilsatan already has @ digitalrivers. What excuse could there possibly be to stick with Vista out of interest?
Takes longer to install, hours to do the service packs, donkeys years when it stops responding, only to be left with a fresh install of the worst OS in history...!?

Thanks Deja. I've got it now on a bootbale usb. It pains me to stick it back on this laptop.

Also running got utorrent now and am downloading the drp iso.

Probably a licencing thing, annoyed me that you could no longer downgrade Vista Business to XP for free. Obviously wouldn't do that now support has nearly ended but years ago they ended the downgrade process.

As evil say, licensing. Can't stick a dodgy win7 on somebody else's laptop. (especially as i don't really know them)
